Baseball: Union City and Bronson split, Quincy rolls, Coldwater falls in baseball action

UNION CITY – The Union City Chargers battled to a hard-fought split with non-conference foe Pennfield Tuesday night, winning game one 14-1 before dropping game two 8-1.

Game one saw Union City firing on all cylinders as the Chargers scored one run in the first, four in the second and third, and five in the fourth for their 14, as the team out hit Pennfield 9-3 in the win.

Ryan Zweng took the win on the mound for Union City, throwing three innings in the start, allowing only one unearned run on no hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Junior Aidan Decker packed the big bat for Tuesday’s battle, hitting the program’s first home run of the year, a rocket shot to left field.

Owen Jackson added a triple, three walks, and two RBIs while Zweng had a pair of hits, both singles, with an RBI and two runs scored.

Game two saw Pennfield take the 8-1 victory, as the Charger offense was stymied by Pennfield’s pitching duo of Spinney and Peasons who combined to throw five and two-thirds of an inning, allowing only five hits and one earned run with 11 strikeouts.

Eli Payne took the loss on the mound for Union City after throwing four innings and a third in the start, allowing four runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Jackson, Zweng, Decker, Payne, and Alex Boyer all recorded singles in the loss.

Coldwater swept by Gull Lake

GULL LAKE – The Coldwater Cardinals took to the road on Tuesday to face off with the Gull Lake Blue Devils in double header action on the diamond. The night belonged to Gull Lake as it was a clean sweep for the home team, with the Blue Devils taking wins of 5-1 and 11-2.

Game one saw Gull Lake open an early lead they did not look back from, going on to take the 5-1 win.

Gull Lake out hit Coldwater 7-3 in the game, while taking advantage of six Cardinal errors committed.

Dayton Ennis took the loss on the mound for Coldwater after throwing five innings in the start, allowing four hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts and two walks.

Evan Porter, Kayden Roby, and Ethan Parker all had singles in the game for Coldwater.

Game two saw Gull Lake use a huge fifth inning, where they plated seven runs, to open an early lead that would not be challenged in the win.

Evan Porter took the loss on the mound for Coldwater after throwing four and two-thirds of an inning, allowing five hits and nine runs, only four earned, with six walks and three strikeouts.

Porter and Landon Auble each had a multi-hit game while Dayton Ennis added a triple and Owen Tappenden chipped in with a double.

Coldwater will be back in action Thursday when they host Harper Creek.

Quincy routs Reading in Big 8 opener

READING – The Quincy Orioles had little trouble in their Big 8 season opener versus Reading Tuesday night, rolling to a pair of wins over Reading by scores of 18-0 and 11-0.

Game one of the night saw Quincy out hit Reading 10-2 in just three innings of work, scoring one run in the first, nine in the second, and eight in the third for their 18 runs.

Outfielder Jimmy Maynard led the Quincy attack, finishing 3 for 3 with three singles, four RBis, and two runs scored. Ethan Copas also knocked out multiple hits, finishing 3 for 4 with two singles and a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Brennan Allman took the win on the mound for Quincy after throwing three innings of two hit baseball, walking just one while striking out seven.

Game two saw Quincy score in every inning as the Orioles out hit Reading 12-1 on the way to the 11-0 win.

Mickey Graves secured the win on the mound for the Orioles after throwing four innings of no-hit baseball, walking four while striking out six.

Ryan Kempter, Brennan Allman, Mickey Connin, and Alex Barry all had multiple hit games while Barry, Grant Holroyd, Connin and Kempter all notched doubles in the win.

Bronson splits with Concord to kick of Big 8 slate

CONCORD – The Bronson Vikings managed a hard-fought doubleheader split with Concord on Tuesday night, kicking off their Big 8 conference schedule with a 7-4 loss and a 3-1 victory.

Game one saw Concord open a 5-0 lead over the first two innings and recover from a three run fifth inning from the Vikintgs with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to put away the win. The game showed traces of the early contest it indeed was, as Bronson committed seven fielding errors while Concord committed six.

Max Byler took the loss on the mound for Bronson after throwing four innings in the start while allowing seven runs, with none of those earned. Byler allowed three hits and walked five while striking out four.

James Jourdan and Landyn Watkins both had singles in the loss while Owen Kimmons added an RBI.

Game two saw Bronson senior Seth Withington shut down the Concord offensive attack, taking the win on the mound after throwing six beautiful innings. Withington allowed four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.

Warner Wotta led the way at the plate for Bronson in game two, finishing 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. Also adding to the Viking effort was Dawson Soergel and Owen Kimmons each with a single. Withington chipped in for his own cause at the plate, smacking a double.

“Happy to get the split tonight,” Bronson coach Matt Watkins said. “Seth (Withington) pitched great for us in game two. We did just enough to get the win. We are back at it tomorrow.”

Bronson is now 2-3 on the year and 1-1 in the Big 8 conference.
