Texas baseball blasts Sam Houston State behind five home runs

Texas continued to swing a hot bat in a 16-8 win over Sam Houston State at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.

The Longhorns began the week averaging a Big 12-best two home runs per game. They hit five against the Bearkats. Kimble Schuessler and Jalin Flores both cleared the Yeti Yard section of the ballpark over the first four frames as Texas built a 6-1 lead. Jared Thomas and Will Gasparino hit the sixth and seventh grand slams of UT's season and Peyton Powell's seventh-inning solo shot provided an exclamation point.

The Longhorns (28-18, 13-8) have crushed 20 homers over their last five games.

Playing its final midweek game of the season, Texas recorded 11 extra-base hits against the Bearkats. And 14 of the Longhorns' 16 runs were scored with two outs in an inning. Texas led by as many as 14 runs.

"Hitting is contagious, you can see that," said Schuessler, who added three doubles to his homer. "Pretty much everyone raked tonight."

The win came two days after Texas won both games of a Big 12 series doubleheader at Oklahoma. Due to a weather-delayed ending to Sunday's second game and a bus ride home, Texas did not return to Austin until after 4 a.m. Monday. The team already had a day off scheduled for Monday, so players were able to focus on rest and final exams.

"We're trying to build a mature team here and having the ability to be a lot more consistent is a part of that," Texas coach David Pierce said. "I thought they did a great job of just getting focused. We've been so good with adversity and our backs against the wall."

Texas returns to Disch-Falk on Friday to open a three-game series against No. 14 Oklahoma State. The Cowboys (31-14, 14-7) are tied for second in the Big 12 standings; Texas is in fourth.
