Panthers sign former Jets WR Stephen Hill to practice squad
After spending two fruitless seasonswith the Jets after they took him in the second round of the 2012 draft, receiver Stephen Hill was released last week.
But the Panthers, in need of receiver help, have offered Hill a second chance, signing him Tuesday to the team's practice squad.
Hill certainly could use some seasoning. According to the Pro Football Focus measurements, Hill only caught 37.5 percent of the passes aimed his way last year, ranking 100 out of 111 receivers.
According to his agent, Alan Herman, that wasn't the main issue, though.
"I'm disappointed in (Jets GM John) Idzik and (coach) Rex (Ryan) with the way the whole thing went down there,'' Herman said Sunday. "Two years in that kind of situation is disheartening. He didn't have a chance that first year with that whole Tim Tebow-Mark Sanchez fiasco. ... His second year, Geno Smith was learning how to play quarterback. So they never threw the ball deep because they wanted to simplify things for Geno."
Now, Hill likely will take the majority of his passes from backup Panthers quarterbacks Derek Anderson or Joe Webb.
Either way, the signing should make Hill's agent happy. Mostly because of the Panthers receivers coach.
