NFL-National Football League roundup

Oct 17 (The Sports Xchange) - The Houston Texans added Pro Bowl defensive end J.J. Watt to the injury report with an illness for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Watt, who hasn't missed a game in his career due to injury, is listed as questionable after practicing all week. On Saturday, the team said whether Watt plays will be determined by how he feels before the game. Watt, who leads the Texans with four sacks, was not listed on the official injury report Friday. According to ESPN.com, Watt is the fourth player for the Texans (1-4) to become sick this week. Receiver Jaelen Strong, cornerback A.J. Bouye and practice squad quarterback Zac Dysert all missed practices. Strong also is questionable, while Bouye is listed as probable. Outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney was ruled out Friday with a sprained ankle. - - - The Buffalo Bills have not named a starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the undefeated Cincinnati Bengals, but ESPN is reporting that E.J. Manuel will get the call in place of the injured Tyrod Taylor. Manuel, who took the majority of the first-team snaps in practice, has not played this season after losing the job to Taylor. Manuel completed 58 percent of his passes for 838 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions in five games last season. - - - Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson was ruled out of Sunday's game against the New York Jets because of a hamstring injury. Jackson was downgraded from questionable after not traveling with the team to New Jersey on Saturday. He was injured in the Redskins' season opener without making a reception. - - - The Chicago Bears placed defensive end Ego Ferguson on season-ending injured reserve and signed defensive lineman Bruce Gaston. The Bears had listed Ferguson as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions with a knee injury. Gaston has appeared in two games this season with the Green Bay Packers, with one tackle. - - - New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is listed as questionable for Monday night's game at the Philadelphia Eagles because of a hamstring injury. Beckham, who has not practiced this week, sustained the injury last Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. - - - Eagles wide receiver Nelson Agholor will miss Monday night's game against the Giants with an ankle injury. Running back Ryan Mathews is questionable with a groin injury. He has rushed for a team-high 205 yards this season. The Eagles will be without linebacker Kiko Alonso (knee), defensive end Brandon Bair (groin), and linebacker Mychal Kendricks (hamstring). - - - Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Brandon Weeden was too cautious and the struggling team now needs a quarterback to take more chances. Jones said he expects next week's starting quarterback, Matt Cassel, will take those chances for the 2-3 Cowboys. "I think he's also got experience in basically just stepping up in the pocket and making some plays," Jones said of Cassel. "Now, he will, with that experience though, do something that Weeden was not doing. Weeden was so conservative, he was coached to be conservative to a degree, but he was not taking chances with that ball." Coach Jason Garrett confirmed Wednesday that Cassel will take over for Weeden at quarterback when the Cowboys, coming off their bye week, face the New York Giants on Oct. 25. The Cowboys are winless in three games without injured Tony Romo as their starting quarterback. - - - The Indianapolis Colts elevated inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera to the 53-man roster from the practice squad and released return specialist Marcus Thigpen. Herrera's promotion may be because linebackers Jerrell Freeman (groin) and Nate Irving (knee) are both listed as questionable for Sunday night's game against the New England Patriots. - - - The Denver Broncos elevated running back Kapri Bibbs from the practice squad to the active roster and released tight end Richard Gordon. The Broncos are 30th in the league in rushing, averaging just 3.3 yards per carry. Denver had just two healthy running backs on the roster -- C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman -- for Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns. Juwan Thompson was limited this week because of a hamstring injury. - - - The Baltimore Ravens promoted running back Terrence Magee from their practice squad to the active roster and waived cornerback Charles James II.
