Surging Tigers battle Mets in Free Game of the Day

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night by the score of 6-3, snapping an eight-game winning streak that vaulted them back into contention in the AL Central. That loss was no fault of Miguel Cabrera’s, though.

He’s been on absolute tear lately, and that continued with a two-hit night that included a homer, his fourth in four games. The Tigers enter play Friday three games behind the Indians for first place, not a bad place to be considering their slow start, the injuries they’ve sustained and a pitching staff that isn’t exactly amazing.

We’ll see if the Tigers can keep the success coming Friday, when they start a series with the New York Mets. Detroit sends Justin Verlander (11-6, 3.54 ERA) to the mound to face Noah Syndergaard (9-5, 2.48 ERA), with first pitch at 7:10 p.m. ET. It’ll be the first meeting between Syndergaard and Cabrera, and that alone should be worth watching. Syndergaard is one of the most electrifying pitchers in the game today, but Cabrera has proven himself to be one of the most consistent hitters of the past decade.

Miggy’s so good it probably gets taken for granted — until times last season when was hurt, missed 43 games and we saw the toll it took on the Tigers, who finished in last place.

This year, he’s been his usual self. He’s hitting .308 with 25 homers and 70 RBIs, but these past few weeks, he’s given us a reminder of just how dangerous his bat can be. Since that Tigers win streak started on July 25, he’s hitting .441 with six homers and 13 RBIs.

That’s why, folks, you can never really bet against the Tigers when Cabrera is around. Even when they start slow and seem like also-rans at the end May, they’ve got Miggy. And that always makes them a threat.
