Indians select contract of Jason Giambi

The Cleveland Indians selected the contract on veteran infielder Jason Giambi from the Triple-A Columbus roster, the team announced Monday.

The team immediately placed Giambi on the 15-day disabled list because of a lower back strain. He is eligible to come off the disabled list April 9.

Giambi, 42, played for the Colorado Rockies in 2012, when he hit .225 with one homer in 60 games.

The Indians also optioned catcher Yn Gomes and infiender Cord Phelps to Triple-A Columbus.
