Cubs oust player personnel director

The struggling Chicago Cubs have dismissed Oneri Fleita, the former head of their minor-league organization and international scouting operations.

Fleita had been with the club for 17 seasons in various capacities. He joined the Cubs in 1995 as a minor league manager and was named a vice president of player personnel in 2007.

"I'm very grateful for the opportunity for my years with the Cubs," Fleita said in a statement. "I wish the Ricketts family and (president of baseball operations) Theo [Epstein] the best. I can't wait for the day the fans get to see the trophy hoisted here."

Last September, Fleita was given a four-year contract afterformer general manager Jim Hendry was let go. But in November, after Theo Epstein took over, Jason McLeod assumed Fleita's duties as head of scouting and player development and Fleita was named a vice president of player personnel.

"All of us with the Cubs owe Oneri a debt of gratitude for his tremendous service to the organization over many years," Epstein said.

Before joining the Cubs, Fleita was a player, coach and manager in the Baltimore Orioles' minor-league system for seven years.
