Video: Tim Thomas with the latest 'Save of the Year' candidate

Let's get the business part of the game out of the way.

Kris Versteeg's(notes) goal with under a minute to go forced overtime and later Phil Kessel(notes) beat Tim Thomas(notes) in the shootout for a 3-2 win by the Toronto Maple Leafs over the Boston Bruins.

During overtime, Clarke MacArthur(notes) dug the puck out along the boards and had a quick 2-on-1. A failed deke saw the puck head towards Francois Beauchemin(notes), who had tons of open net to shoot at, but then Thomas did this:

When you have the entire broadcasting crew in awe of what just happened, you know you did something spectacular.

Last month we saw a trio of "save of the year" candidates that'll be discussed alongside Thomas' rob job of of Beauchemin. Montreal's Carey Price(notes) robbed Chad LaRose(notes) of the Hurricanes in a similar manner to Thomas'. Then there was Jonas Gustavsson's(notes) slick stick save on Nicklas Backstrom(notes) and then Nikolai Khabibulin's(notes) desperation swipe to bat a puck away while he was down in the crease.

Thomas' stop tonight may currently atop the list of great saves of the young season and even with four months remaining in the regular season, it's hard to imagine we might see something that could top what the Bruins' goaltending showed us tonight.
