This week's Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week award is headed to the pool for the first time this school year.

Windsor boys swimmer Jake Eccleston took top honors in the Fort Collins area for April 28-May 4 after several record-setting performances in the league championships.

The Wizards' senior won the 100-yard butterfly (49.60 seconds) and 200 freestyle (1:40.35) events and helped Windsor's 200 free relay team set a new record time of 1:28.70 en route to the conference title.

The record performances also helped Windsor win its first-ever boys Northern Conference team championship, scoring 863 points to runner-up Silver Creek's 817.

Eccleston has won back-to-back Class 4A state titles in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley races, Windsor's only boys swimming championships to date.

He'll be a major favorite to bring home more hardware at this weekend's 4A state meet.

A second-time nominee, Eccleston is the first swimmer and third Windsor athlete to win the Blue FCU Athlete of the Week honor this school year, joining boys basketball player John Backhaus and boys sprinter Mikey Munn.

The Wizards' senior standout pulled away from the pack to win the fan poll with a heavy majority (70.4%) of the 34,300 votes cast.

That beat out other fantastic performances from his fellow nominees:

  • Isabel Allori, Liberty Common girls track & field (runner-up with 14.6%)

  • Sean Togher, Fort Collins baseball

  • Erin Herrmann, Fossil Ridge girls track & field

  • Sybil Arabi, Poudre girls soccer

The Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week series features five nominees every Monday, with voting at Coloradoan.com until 11 p.m. Wednesday and the winner named on Thursday.
