Who's in and who's out of the knockout round at the 2023 World Cup?

While there's plenty of soccer to be played at the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the knockout round picture is complete.

The United States advanced to the Round of 16 after a scoreless draw with Portugal. The two-time defending champions finished second in Group E Tuesday after the Netherlands blew out Vietnam 7-0.

The group stage concluded Thursday with Morocco beating Colombia 1-0, while South Korea and Germany playing to a 1-1 draw.

Here's a look at how each of the 32 teams stand:

Scores and standings last updated Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Group A

  1. Switzerland (5 points - 2-0 win over Philippines; 0-0 tie vs. Norway; 0-0 tie vs. New Zealand): An early-morning draw Sunday with tournament host New Zealand put the Swiss into the knockout stage. They will face Spain, the runner-up of Group C, in the next round.

  2. Norway (4 points - 1-0 loss to New Zealand; 0-0 tie vs. Switzerland; 6-0 win vs. Philippines): Norway, the 1995 World Cup winners, were at risk of missing the knockout stage with only one point before a major victory against Philippines on Sunday, combined with some help from Switzerland to hold New Zealand scoreless. Norway takes second place thanks to a +5 goal differential and will play Japan next.

  3. New Zealand (4 points - 1-0 win over Norway; 1-0 loss to Philippines; 0-0 tie vs. Switzerland): A roller-coaster World Cup — the highs of a first-ever World Cup win followed by the lows of a stunning loss — comes to an end for one of the two host nations.

  4. Philippines (3 points - 2-0 loss to Switzerland; 1-0 win over New Zealand; 6-0 loss vs. Norway): The Philippines had a memorable World Cup debut by pulling off a shocking upset against New Zealand. Their journey ended with Sunday with a loss to Norway.

Group B

  1. Australia (6 points - 1-0 win over Ireland; 3-2 loss to Nigeria; 4-0 win over Canada): The loss to Nigeria put the pressure on Australia — a pre-tournament dark horse contender — to defeat Canada to advance. And the hosts delivered in a big way, winning the group and advancing to play the runner-up of Group D, Denmark.

  2. Nigeria (5 points - 0-0 tie vs. Canada; 3-2 win over Australia; 0-0 tie vs. Ireland): The Super Falcons take second in the group. Their big win over Australia helped push them through to the knockouts, where they will face powerhouse England, Group D winner.

  3. Canada (4 points - 0-0 tie vs. Nigeria; 2-1 win over Ireland; 4-0 loss to Australia): The Olympic gold medalists in Tokyo needed to avoid a loss to host Australia. Now, they are eliminated after the group stage for the first time since the 2011 World Cup.

  4. Ireland (1 points - 1-0 loss to Australia; 2-1 loss to Canada; 0-0 tie vs. Nigeria): Ireland's first World Cup appearance will end with a group stage exit.

  1. Japan (9 points - 5-0 win over Zambia; 2-0 win over Costa Rica; 4-0 win over Spain): Japan made a statement against Spain to win the group. They will play Norway in the next round.

  2. Spain (6 points - 3-0 win over Costa Rica; 5-0 win over Zambia; 4-0 loss to Japan): Spain finished second in the group. It will move on to play Switzerland.

  3. Zambia (3 points - 5-0 loss to Japan; 5-0 loss to Spain; 3-1 win over Costa Rica): One of eight World Cup first-timers, Zambia got its first World Cup win against Costa Rica in its final group stage game before heading home.

  4. Costa Rica (0 points - 3-0 loss to Spain; 2-0 loss to Japan; 3-1 loss to Zambia): A defeat against Japan on Tuesday eliminated Las Ticas from advancing to the knockout stage before their final match against Zambia.

Group D

  1. England (9 points - 1-0 win over Haiti; 1-0 win over Denmark; 6-1 win over China): The reigning European champions didn't ease up during a dominant win against China on Tuesday. Lauren James scored twice in England's final group game, setting up a Round of 16 match against Nigeria.

  2. Denmark (6 points - 1-0 win over China; 1-0 loss to England; 2-0 win over Haiti): Denmark is on to its first foray into the knockout stage since the 1995 World Cup. Pernille Harder scored off a penalty after Dayana Pierre-Louis' handball in the 21st minute. Denmark faces Australia in the Round of 16.

  3. China (3 points - 1-0 loss to Denmark; 1-0 win over Haiti; 6-1 loss to England): China allowed three goals in the first half against England and saw its hopes dissipate quickly with a lopsided loss.

  4. Haiti (0 points - 1-0 loss to England; 1-0 loss to China; 2-0 loss to Denmark): In their first World Cup, the Haitian women were eliminated after a loss to Denmark.

Group E

  1. Netherlands (7 points - 1-0 win over Portugal; 1-1 tie vs. United States; 7-0 win over Vietnam): A tie against the USWNT and a dominant victory against Vietnam on Tuesday put the Dutch on top of Group E. Esmee Brugts, who is 20 years old, had two goals in the final victory. They play South Africa on Saturday.

  2. United States (5 points - 3-0 win over Vietnam; 1-1 tie vs. Netherlands; 0-0 tie vs. Portugal): The USWNT made it through to the Round of 16, but it wasn't pretty to watch. While the Dutch poured in the goals against Vietnam, scoring four times in the first 23 minutes, the Americans looked lackluster and prone to turnovers against a confident Portuguese side. Now, they face nemesis Sweden for a tough Round of 16 match Sunday.

  3. Portugal (4 points - 1-0 loss to Netherlands; 2-0 win over Vietnam; 0-0 tie vs. United States): Portugal had a win-and-in scenario against the USWNT but couldn't get the job done. Portugal's Ana Capeta unleashed a corker early in second-half stoppage time and it ricocheted off the post. Coach Francisco Neto said after the game, "Right now it hurts, but tomorrow there will be pride."

  4. Vietnam (0 points - 3-0 loss to United States; 2-0 loss to Portugal, 7-0 loss to Netherlands): Vietnam, another World Cup newcomer, was eliminated before Tuesday's lopsided loss to the Dutch.

Group F

  1. France (7 points - 0-0 tie vs. Jamaica; 2-1 win over Brazil; 6-3 win over Panama): A squad mired in off-field turbulence had a less-than-ideal start to this World Cup. But France has reached the quarterfinals of the last two World Cups and only needed a draw against Panama to advance. Instead, they pulled out a six-goal victory and move on to play the runners-up from Group H, which will be determined Thursday morning.

  2. Jamaica (5 points - 0-0 tie vs. France; 1-0 win over Panama; 0-0 tie vs. Brazil): The Reggae Girlz advance out of the group stage for the first time ever. A scoreless draw upset Marta's Brazil and sent the powerhouse home. Jamaica will next play the winners of Group H, which will be determined Thursday morning.

  3. Brazil (4 points - 4-0 win over Panama; 2-1 loss to France; 0-0 tie vs. Jamaica): Brazil could not pull our a victory against Jamaica to advance and will be going home after the group stage, ending Marta's legendary World Cup career.

  4. Panama (0 points - 4-0 loss to Brazil; 1-0 loss to Jamaica; 6-3 loss to France): Panama was eliminated ahead of its final showdown with France, but still mustered three goals against a major player.

Group G

  1. Sweden (9 points - 2-1 win over South Africa; 5-0 win over Italy; 2-0 win over Argentina): Wednesday's win against Argentina gave Sweden — third-place finishers at the 2019 World Cup — the top spot in the group and a rival showdown with the United States in the Round of 16.

  2. South Africa (4 point - 2-1 loss to Sweden; 2-2 tie vs. Argentina; 3-2 win over Italy): Blowing a 2-0 lead against Argentina really hurt South Africa's chances of advancing, but a big win over Italy sent Bayana Bayana through to the next round, where they will face Netherlands.

  3. Italy (3 points - 1-0 win over Argentina; 5-0 loss to Sweden; 3-2 loss to South Africa): Italy's World Cup fate came down to South Africa. Win and they were in, but they lost and are going home.

  4. Argentina (1 point - 1-0 loss to Italy; 2-2 tie vs. South Africa; 2-0 loss to Sweden): Fought valiantly to salvage a draw against South Africa, but was sent home after a loss to Sweden.

Group H

  1. Colombia (6 points - 2-0 win over South Korea; 2-1 win vs. Germany; 1-0 loss to Morocco): Despite the loss to Morocco, Columbia advances to the knockout round and plays the role of the underdog.

  2. Morocco (6 points - 6-0 loss to Germany; 1-0 win vs. South Korea; 1-0 vs. Colombia): In it's first-ever women's World Cup, Morocco makes history and becomes first Arab nation ever to reach knockout round on the day Germany is eliminated.

  3. Germany (4 points - 6-0 win over Morocco; 2-1 loss vs. Colombia; 1-1 tie vs. South Korea): Germany fails to reach the knockout stages for the first time in World Cup history after a tie vs. South Korea and Morocco's stunning win.

  4. South Korea (1 points - 2-0 loss to Colombia; 1-0 loss vs. Morocco; 1-1 tie vs. Germany): South Korea is eliminated, but not before playing the role of spoiler in its tie vs. Germany.
