Westlake boys, Newbury Park girls swim to Ventura County titles

The Westlake High boys team and Newbury Park High girls team captured titles while three individual swimmers set meet records at the 15th annual Ventura County Swimming Championships on Thursday at Buena High.

Westlake finished with 372 points to win the boys team championship. Camarillo finished second with 331.50 points and Royal was third with 233.50. Oak Park (208) took fourth and Buena (166) and Newbury Park (166) tied for fifth out of 14 teams.

Newbury Park finished with 357 points to win the girls team championship. Ventura was second with 334 points and Camarillo took third with 257. Buena (199) placed fourth and Westlake (175) was fifth out of 15 teams.

Nordhoff High senior Quin Seider set the meet record in the 200 boys freestyle, finishing in a time of 1 minute, 36.94 seconds. Seider had broke the record during the prelims and then posted an even better time in the finals. The Arizona State commit broke his own meet record in winning the 100 freestyle in a time of 44.39. He also broke his own record in the 50 freestyle by finishing in 20.54 in the leadoff leg of Nordhoff's 200 freestyle relay team.

Seider, who has been The Star's Boys Swimmer of the Year the last two seasons, won the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 titles in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle last season and a Division 4 title in the 100 butterfly in his sophomore season.

Rio Mesa High senior Jaiden Monroe set the meet record in the boys 100 backstroke during the prelims and then bettered the record with a time of 50.15 seconds to win the final.

Ventura High junior Sarah Beckman set the girls 200 freestyle record with a time of 1:49.70. Beckman, who has been named The Star's Girls Swimmer of the Year the past two seasons, also won the 100 freestyle in 51.41. She holds the meet record in the 100 butterfly, which she set with a time of 55.48 in 2023.

Beckman anchored Ventura's 400 freestyle team, with Emily Gonzalez, Macy Dall and Juliet Lazowski, to the title in 3:42.89. Gonzalez, a junior, won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.91 for the Cougars' other individual title.

BOYS

One individual title and two relay titles helped lead the Westlake boys to the title. Senior Bryan Huang won the 100 breaststroke in 59.56. Mason Martsolf, Noah Loo, Lucas Blietz and Chase Martsolf won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:30.27. Lucas Blietz, Chase Martsolf, Dylan Blietz and Mark Mashkovich won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:14.06.

Oak Park had three boys champions. Senior March Yuan won the 200 IM in 1:57.43, sophomore Elliott Drottar won the 50 freestyle in 21.73, and freshman Pablo Ingrum won the 500 freestyle in 4:43.76.

Royal junior Aneesh Veeravatnam won the 100 butterfly in 51.49.

Camarillo's Paul Patterson, Jackson Mulchay, Kalani Martin and Stefano Pozzi won the 200 medley relay in 1:38.34.

GIRLS

Megan Wang led the way for the champion Newbury Park girls team. The sophomore won the 200 IM with a school-record time of 2:08.19 and the 100 backstroke in 57.07. Wang, Stella Holzkamp, Caroline Nyborg and Maryam Attia won the 200 medley relay in 1:54.60.

Buena sophomore Addison Bruno won the 50 freestyle in 24.92. Bruno, Madelyn Pierce, Kendall Nagaoka and Maren Bursek led Buena to the 200 freestyle relay title with a time of 1:46.16.

Nordhoff sophomore Melina Seider, the younger sister of Quin, won the 500 freestyle in 5:10.70.

Moorpark junior Chloe Cheevers won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.12.
