See who readers picked as the Morning News Winter Sports Athlete of the Week in an open poll

There was some top-notch action on the basketball court last week as teams from the Savannah area battled for playoff position in their respective region tournaments. On the boys side, New Hampstead, Savannah High, Savannah Country Day, St. Andrew's and Bethesda won region titles. In girls basketball, Calvary Day and Bryan County took home region crowns.

In wrestling, South Effingham won the Class 6A State Traditional title after winning the State Duals Meet last month. Ashton Anderson repeated as heavyweight champion, and Eli Wood won a title at 138 pounds.

Savanah Morning News readers weighed in and selected the Savannah Morning News Winter Sports Athlete of the Week in an open poll, with no restrictions on voting.

Richmond Hill's Izzy West, who finished second in the GHSA Girls Wrestling Tournament at 110 pounds, was the winner with 45.35% of the vote. South Effingham's Ashton Anderson, who repeated as the Class 6A heavyweight wrestling champion, was second with 32.21%, while his teammate Eli Wood, a state champ at 138 pounds, was third with 21.98% of the tally.

Ashton Anderson, South Effingham

The senior heavyweight wrestler defended his Class 6A state title as he beat River Creel of Brunswick to win another championship. He finished the season with a 55-5 record.

Izzy West, Richmond Hill

The junior finished second in the GHSA Girls State Wrestling Tournament at 110 pounds. She finished the season with a 32-3 record.

Eli Wood, South Effingham

The senior 138-pounder won the Class 6A state crown with a 2-1 decision over Glynn Academy's Jefferson Cuttino as he helped the Mustangs win the team title. He ended the year with a 57-7 record.

Robert Spaulding, Savannah Country Day

The senior guard scored 10 of his team-high 22 points in the first quarter to lead SCD, a No. 7 seed, to a 60-52 win over No. 1 seed Johnson to win the Region 3-3A title.

Bre Jones, Calvary Day

The junior guard scored 13 points and had five steals to help lead the Cavs to a 46-38 win over Savannah Country Day in the Region 3-3A Tournament championship game.

AJ Williams, New Hampstead

The freshman guard scored 20 points to help lead the Phoenix to a 68-64 win over Benedictine as New Hampstead won the Region 3-4A title.

Caleb Jones, Benedictine

The junior guard had 32 points in the Region 3-4A championship game against New Hampstead.

Jermaine Edwards, Savannah High

The senior scored 16 points to help lead Savannah High to a 59-55 win over Woodville-Tompkins in the Region 3-A Division I title game.

Kayley Wedlow, Bryan County

The senior guard had 21 points to help lead Bryan County to a 57-47 win over Metter in the Region 3-A Division I title game.

Zayden Edwards, St. Andrew's

The junior guard had 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals to help lead the Lions to a region championship with a win over Frederica Academy. Edwards was named the Region Player of the Year.

Ryan King, Bethesda Academy

The junior had 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal as the Blazers beat Cross to win a region championship.

Matas Aidietis, Memorial Day

The senior guard had 20 points to help lead the Matadors to a win over Twiggs Academy.
