Vote now for the Daily Leader Athlete of the Week from April 22-27

Opportunities for area athletes to excel were limited last week as rain washed out most events set for Friday and Saturday. However, there were plenty of events that did take place to create a strong list of candidates for the Daily Leader Athlete of the Week honor for the week of April 22-27.

Each week, the Daily Leader nominates a group of stars and you get to go and vote in our poll. Coaches may email Erich Murphy at emurphy@gannett.com by 9 a.m. each Monday to submit a potential nominee who can be placed on the ballot.

Voting ends at noon on Friday.

Olivia Chismarick, WFC

Chismarick was key in a win over Grant Park with a pair of hits, a run batted in and a run scored. She tripled three times, plated two runs and scored three times in a win over Midland.

Faith Fields, Prairie Central

Fields tossed a one-hitter in an Illini Prairie Conference win over Paxton-Buckley-Loda. She fanned seven the run allowed was unearned.

Averi Jury, Dwight

Jury was offensive in her approach at the plate with a double, single, two runs batted in and two runs scored in a win over Midland. She also got the win in the circle with seven strikeouts in tossing a shutout. In the other game with Midland, a win, in the home-and-home set, she belted a home run, singled, drove in three runs and scored twice. She fanned one in a relief effort against Seneca.

Wyatt Statler, Dwight

Statler belted a walk-off home run in a win over Midland. He also had two singles with his RBI and run scored. In the other game with Midland, a win, in the home-and-home set, he had two hits a run batted in and a run scored.

Tori Seggerman, El Paso-Gridley

Seggerman had a double, drove in two runs and scored once in a win over Fieldcrest. She had two double, a single, a RBI and scored four runs in a loss to Tri-Valley.

Allison Epley, Lexington-Ridgeview

Epley recorded a base hit, drove in three runs and scored thrice in a win over Fieldcrest. She collected a double and single in a loss to LeRoy.

Blaine Friedmansky, Lexington

Friedmansky collected a triple, single, run batted in and scored two runs in a loss to Fieldcrest. He also struck out three in relief. He contributed a hit and RBI at the plate and struck out one while picking up the win in relief in a 10-inning decision over LeRoy.

Henry DeYoung, Pontiac

DeYoung collected extra-base hits in three games as Pontiac won two of three games during the week. The highlight was his game-tying three-run double against Prairie Central. He had a double and two runs batted in against Monticello, and a double, RBI and run scored in a loss to Manteno.

Pontiac Boys Track

Pontiac wins Pontiac Relays with 86 points. PTHS wins five events, including the 4x800 (Jake Dewald, Fernando Daily, Dylan Verdun, Tyler Hansen), Medley (Daily, Dewald, Cam Fenton, Peyton Beebe), discus (Amare Curtiss), high jump (Jeremy Melton) and long jump (Melton).

Prairie Central Sprint Relays

Prairie Central won two sprint relays and took second by the closest of margins in the third at the Pontiac Relays. Winning were the 4x200 (Brian Zhao, Caiden Schulz, Kolton Wright, Tagen Fehr) and 4x400 (Schulz, Wright, Fehr, Alexavier Kaufman) while the 4x100 (Zhao, Schulz, Wright, Wyatt Ault) was second by 1-100th of a second.
