Vote: Ames Tribune Athletes of the Week for April 22-28

This past week saw several Ames-area high school track and field athletes compete at the 114th-annual Drake Relays.

Area track and field athletes showed off their talents against the best competition in the state from Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Athletes from area schools ended up producing three top-five performances during the event.

It was also another busy week for area high school girls and boys golfers, tennis players and soccer players.

Here are the Ames Tribune's female and male Athlete of the Week candidates for the week of April 22-28. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Girls

Sarah Feddersen, Gilbert

Feddersen placed sixth individually in the girls open 800-meter run and anchored the Gilbert 4x800 relay team to its second seventh-place finish in a row at the Drake Relays.

She ran her fastest time of the season in the 800 at 2:12.90. The Gilbert 4x800 team combined to run a season-best time of 9:27.52.

Angelica Attinger, Ames

Attinger was part of two events that placed in the top five at the Drake Relays.

She helped Ames to a fifth-place finish in the girls shuttle hurdle relay preliminaries. The Little Cyclones finished just one spot shy of qualifying for state after running a 1:06.60 on Saturday.

Later Saturday, Attinger ran in the 400 hurdles. She came in fifth after crossing the finish line in 1:03.64.

Sophia Hatcher, Ames

Hatcher also placed in two events for the Ames girls at the Drake Relays.

She anchored the Ames shuttle hurdle team to its fifth-place finish in the prelims. On Friday, she placed seventh in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 8.25 inches.

Marley Turk, Ames

Turk earned a top-six finish in the 3,000-meters Thursday during the Distance Carnival at the Drake Relays.

She completed the race in 10:06.39.

Kamryn Lande, Roland-Story

Lande anchored the Roland-Story girls 4x100 team to a surprising performance during the prelims at the Drake Relays on Saturday.

Roland-Story was ranked 71st among 95 qualifying teams entering the race. Lande ran an outstanding anchor leg to help the Norse win their heat, and they ended up placing 15th overall with a time of 49.86.

Boys

Chance Lande, Ballard

Lande represents a great team effort by the Ballard boys 4x400 relay team.

After Jameson Witt, Jakson Fleischmann and Eli Rouse ran the first three legs, Lande took the baton on the anchor leg and finished off a new school-record time of 3:19.41. That time was good enough to place the Bombers fourth in the race.

Will Hawthorne, Gilbert

Hawthorne also represents a school-record team effort in a relay at the Drake Relays.

He anchored the Gilbert boys to a new school-record time in the 4x100 prelims. Bradyon Howard, Paul Marpe and Gabe Fierce ran the first three legs, then Hawthorne took over to finish off a 35th-place time of 43.70.

Connor Kunze, Nevada

Kunze ran his best 100 time of the season for the Nevada boys track and field team at the Drake Relays.

Kunze entered the Relays ranked 31st out of 32 qualifiers in the high school boys 100. During Friday's prelims, he came in 20th with a time of 11.45.

Evan Moon, Ames

Moon combined for three goals over two games for the Ames boys soccer team in victories over Norwalk and Marshalltown last week.

Moon put one goal on the board in a 3-0 victory over Norwalk on April 25. He scored twice in an 8-0 victory over Marshalltown on Friday.

Akshay Sarda, Ames

Sarda celebrated senior night for the Ames boys tennis team by turning in two impressive performances during a 9-2 victory over Fort Dodge on April 23.

Sarda swept Fort Dodge's Jaxton Jones with a pair of 6-0 shutouts during the No. 4 singles match. In doubles play he joined up with Jonas Bernard to win the No. 3 match in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3.
