Tony Romo barely cracks a smile after chipping in for eagle at Byron Nelson
Gamblers who like long shots had a unique opportunity this week on the PGA Tour.
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS NFL analyst Tony Romo got a sponsor’s exemption to play on tour at the AT&T Byron Nelson.
The event is played at the Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas, where Romo is a member.
Romo started tourney with 10,000-1 odds
So what kind of odds does an amateur golfer who was once a professional football player get against the real pros while playing on his home course?
Not very good. The Westgate Superbook gave Romo 10,000-1 odds to win this week. As did golfodds.com.
The next longest shot was Michael Kim, listed at 500-1 at golfodds.com
So, no. Romo’s not going to shock the world with a PGA victory in his first tour event at his home course.
But that doesn’t mean he won’t have his moments. And he had a big one during Thursday’s opening round.
Romo scores eagle at PGA event
Romo’s second shot on the 570-yard par 5 seventh landed just short of the green.
He grabbed a wedge and chipped on and watched his ball roll to the pin and into the cup. That adds up to an eagle.

It was a shot Phil Mickelson would be proud of. And look at that game face. That’s not the look of a man out there to have a good time. That’s a man who means business.
Unfortunately for Romo, he gave those two strokes back two holes later with a double-bogey on the par 4 ninth. But he finished his front nine at even par, not bad for a guy who entered the week with 10,000-1 odds.
His back nine was not as kind. Romo bogeyed three times and double-bogeyed the par 4 13th to finish with a five-over 76 on the day, good for 148th in a field of 154.
But even as he stares at missing the cut, nobody can take away his eagle on No. 7.
