Tony Magni to receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Detroit High School Sports Awards show

Few have taught more runners than Tony Magni.

The longtime Novi Detroit Catholic Central coach won his first Catholic League title in 1960 and his first state title in 1983. Five state championships, 30 Catholic League trophies and several decades later, Magni is still at it. Now, he's the Detroit High School Sports Awards, presented by Detroit Area Honda Dealers, 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award winner. The show is produced with the support of Children's Hospital of Michigan.

After running for Detroit St. Anthony in high school, he graduated from Detroit Mercy, then known as University of Detroit. He then found out about a coaching job at Grosse Pointe St. Paul and has never looked back.

Magni made a stop at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s before finding Central Catholic in 1973. He took over the varsity in 1975 and has done everything from coaching track and cross-country to driving the team bus. Two individual state champions have run under his watch and hundreds more have learned from his selflessness.

Not only has Magni coached collegiate runners, but his pupils have even reached the Michigan Supreme Court or served as Michigan Speaker of the House. A native of Ceprano, Italy, Magni was the CHSL person of the year in 2003. In 2011, he was named the boys cross-country coach of the year by the Michigan High School Coaches Association.

Magni will be presented with the award live during the June 20 Detroit High School Sports Awards live show at the Fillmore Detroit. Former Pistons star Richard Hamilton is the featured speaker at the event.
