Titans wrap-up mini-camp

The Tennessee Titans are onto their break, so let’s wrap-up mini-camp.

Mini-camp ended prematurely when four Titans linemen ran a relay race and beat a time that coach Mike Mularkey had set. All the interviews, naturally, are pleasant and the players seem thankful for the early exit.

Taylor Lewan was singled out by Mularkey for being in tremendous shape. He said, “He could run all day.” Mularkey has seen a more mature Lewan ever since day one in the weight room.

The mood is extremely positive. It should be this time of year, but it also seems like General Manager Jon Robinson absolutely “nailed” this offseason. Mularkey commented on how he’s been on teams before where there were numbers at positions and now they don’t have numbers but competition instead. That seems to be echoed throughout all the videos. The players all seem to ‘feel it’ and it’s breeding a good atmosphere.

The team has not released a depth chart. A few times, Mularkey has been adamant that they have not released one. It must be important to him to not have a “pecking order” just yet.

Wide receivers were spelled out on the Titans site as Rishard Matthews opposite Tajae Sharpe with Kendall Wright in the slot. This would mean Hunter is behind Matthews and Dorial Green-Beckham is behind Sharpe.

The cornerbacks have been presented as Perrish Cox versus Brice McCain opposite Jason McCourty. Mularkey did say, as minicamp began, that Cox was excused and needed to catch up so “don’t look into it.” It’s a bit hazy though.

NFL offenses commonly run three wide receiver sets; so depending on their opponent, there could be three starting or at least in for much of the game. That is and it isn’t the real competition. Which backups are pushing McCourty, Cox, and McCain? That would be more fitting.

In his final interview, Cox stated that the defensive backs played different positions during mini-camp. When he spoke further, it’s that defensive coordinator Dick Lebeau wants the defensive backs to know what the others do and how their play impacts the others.

According to Mularkey, Derrick Henry was running the wrong way in pass protection. In shorts, this is no big deal. If Marcus Mariota takes a hit because Henry ran the wrong way, it will be a huge deal.

Second round draft pick Kevin Dodd should be ready for training camp. It will be fascinating to see how Lebeau utilizes his “new toy.” He may give Derrick Morgan and Brian Orakpo breathers at times and also DaQuan Jones. The Titans would need for him to pickup the defense very quickly to be able to pull that off. In the least, he’s an elite athlete for Lebeau to send after the quarterback.

Interviews on the Titans website share what some of the guys will be doing with their free time. Taylor Lewan is headed to California. He is going to workout on the beach and spend some time with friends. Perrish Cox likes to travel to different islands during this break each year. Mariota will be setting up a casual workout with his receivers.
