A record-setting match by midfielder Lexi Missimo helped the Texas women’s soccer team roll past SMU 6-0 Sunday at Myers Stadium.

With a first-half assist to Liz Worden, Missimo passed Kelly Wilson to become the program’s new leader in career assists with 42. Missimo, who entered the match as the only active Division I women’s player with at least 40 career assists, also tied Brittany Timko (Nebraska, 1996-99) for fourth on the Big 12’s career assist list.

Missimo is 10 assists shy of passing Nikki Wojtowicz (Oklahoma State, 2001-04) for the league’s all-time top spot.

Typical of the pass-happy midfielder, Missimo credited teammates Avery Cark and Worden for sending her into the record books.

“(The ball) came to the outside of my foot, and I just tapped it to Avery,” Missimo said. “Avery gave it back, and I played it up to Liz, and she just had a really good shot.”

Now with 11 assists, Missimo is on pace to break her single-season school record of 15 assists set last season.

“Obviously, it just shows that hard work pays off,” she said. “But the ultimate goal is for the team to win, so I’m just glad I can put in an effort to make that happen.”

Texas held SMU to a season-low four shots, including just two on goal, which was also a season low for the Mustangs. Sunday’s performance was the third consecutive match in which the Longhorns have limited an opponent’s offense to five or fewer shots and three or fewer shots on goal. The Longhorns (5-1) and goalie Mia Justus — who celebrated her 21st birthday Sunday — have shut out three consecutive opponents entering Thursday’s home match against Stephen F. Austin.

“I was real excited for another win at home along with another clean sheet for Mia on her birthday. That’s big,” Texas coach Angela Kelly said.
