Tennessee football updates as NCAA penalties announced for Vols, Jeremy Pruitt

Tennessee football will avoid a bowl ban after a years-long investigation into recruiting infractions committed under Jeremy Pruitt, the NCAA revealed Friday.

Avoiding the bowl ban means the Vols can continue their upward trajectory under third-year coach Josh Heupel, who guided the program to an 11-2 finish in 2022, including a victory in the Orange Bowl.

The NCAA penalties stem from infractions committed under Pruitt and his staff from 2018-20.

Jeremy Pruitt received a six-year show-cause in the verdict.

The explosive case included wild and blatant impropriety, including Pruitt's use of a Chick-fil-A bag to give several hundred dollars to the mother of a Tennessee football player after she approached him in late 2020, according to Tennessee's response to the NCAA's notice of allegations.

University administrators have cooperated with the investigation. Tennessee disputed the NCAA's finding that it failed to monitor the football program while recruiting violations were committed under Pruitt.

Jeremy Pruitt's NCAA penalty a 6-year show-cause

The NCAA hammered Jeremy Pruitt on Friday, giving him a six-year show-cause penalty.

A show cause means a university cannot hire a coach or recruiter without NCAA approval during the length of the ban. The penalty effectively removes Pruitt from college football for the foreseeable future.
