Tank Dell, Houston Texans, recovering from Florida shooting. Here are 16 NFL players who have been shot

UPDATE: Dell has been verified as one of the people shot, and a second shooter was spotted on surveillance video.

Houston Texans wide receiver and Daytona Beach native Tank Dell was released from the hospital Sunday after being shot in Sanford, Florida, according to a social media post by the team. It has not yet been confirmed if he was one of the 10 people who received minor wounds during a mass shooting at a Central Florida bar.

A 16-year-old opened fire during a verbal altercation at a crowded private event at Cabana Live at 4380 Carraway Place in unincorporated Sanford, about 20 miles north of Orlando, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office said. The shooter was apprehended by security at the event and later arrested and charged with attempted homicide, discharging a firearm on public property, display and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a minor, deputies told local media.

Several professional football players have been shot over the years, and a lot of them have Florida ties. Here are some of the recent shootings involving an NFL player.

Oct. 16, 2022: Antonio Dennard killed outside Pennsylvania bar

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Antonio Dennard, 32, who also spent time with the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants, was shot and killed in Reading, Pennsylvania. A man was arrested a year later in connection with the shooting.

Aug. 28, 2022: Brian Robinson shot during robbery

Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. was shot multiple times in his lower body during an attempted robbery in Washington. D.C., police said.

Robinson was back on the field five weeks later and finished his rookie season with nearly 800 yards rushing in 12 games. A 17-year-old suspect, who had been 16 at the time of the attempted robbery, and a 15-year-old were arrested in November and charged with assault with intent to rob while armed.

Nov. 30, 2020: Ekom Udofia shot and killed by police

Ekom Udofia, 33, had spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and New Orleans Saints but never played an NFL game. On Nov. 30, Phoenix, Arizona police responded to calls about an armed man behaving erratically and jumping in front of vehicles around 2 a.m. found Udofia in the middle of an intersection.

Udofia pointed what police called a realistic-looking BB gun at them and the two officers shot him. When he ignored their commands on the ground and pointed it at them again, officers arriving on the scene shot at him again, police said. Udofia later died of his injuries.

June 6, 2020: Reche Caldwell killed in ambush outside Tampa home

Wide receiver Donald "Reche" Caldwell, 41, former University of Florida Gator and player for three NFL teams, the Chargers, Patriots and Redskins, was shot in his hometown of Tampa.

According to Caldwell's mother, he was taking his girlfriend on a date when he went back inside to grab a jacket and was ambushed by people in an apparent robbery attempt and shot in the leg and chest. Police later said the robbery attempt did not appear to be random.

July 29, 2016: Antonio Armstrong and wife killed by son

Former Miami Dolphins linebacker Antonio Armstrong, 42, who also played for the San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams, and his wife Dawn were shot in their Houston home. She died immediately, police said, and he died hours later.

Their 16-year-old son AJ was charged with their murder but the first trial was deadlocked and the second declared a mistrial. Aj Armstrong was found guilty in 2023 and sentenced to life in prison, with possible parole after 40 years.

April 9, 2016: Will Smith killed in road rage incident

Former New Orleans Saints defensive lineman Will Smith, 34, died after being shot eight times — seven times in the back — by Cardell Hayes after Hayes' SUV ran into the back of Smiths' vehicle in New Orleans and the men exchanged heated words. Hayes, who said he feared for his life, also shot Smith's wife Racquel in the leg.

Hayes was sentenced to 25 years for manslaughter in 2017, then was released on bond after the Supreme Court outlawed nonunanimous verdicts. He was tried again in January of this year and sentenced, again, to 25 years just last week although he was acquitted of the charge of attempted manslaughter for shooting Mrs. Smith.

Nov. 24, 2015: Stedman Bailey shot while sitting in car in Florida

St. Louis Rams wide receiver and Miramar, Florida native Stedman Bailey was sitting in a car outside a home near Miami with four other people when he was shot twice in the head and critically wounded by people who drove up in another car.

Bailey was, at the time, under a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

July 4, 2009: Steve McNair shot in apparent murder-suicide

Steve McNair, 36, four-time Pro Bowler and 2005 NFL Man of the Year who quarterbacked for the Houston Oilers, Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens, was known for being a family man and supporting the local community with a foundation to help youth charities, a football camp, and a reopened local restaurant.

This was why the NFL world was rocked when he was shot and killed by one mistress, Sahel "Jenni" Kazemi, after she found out about another one. Kazemi then killed herself, police said.

Nov. 26, 2007: Redskins safety Sean Taylor dies after home invasion shooting

Washington Redskins Pro Bowl safety and Florida City, Florida native Sean Taylor, 24, was shot by an intruder when he investigated noises at his Miami home on Nov. 26, 2007. His fiancée, Jackie García, and their 18-month-old daughter, Jackie were unharmed but Taylor's femoral artery was hit. He died the next day.

Four men were arrested the next day and six months later, a fifth was arrested and charged with the murder of the former University of Miami star.

Jan. 1, 2007: Darrent Williams killed in drive-by shooting

Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams, 24, was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting 12 hours after the final game of the season against the San Fransisco 49ers.

On New Year's Day, Williams and two other people left a party where Denver police said there had been an altercation between Crips gang members and fellow Broncos player Brandon Marshall. Marshall and one other person left in a Lincoln Town Car and Williams (who police say had not been involved in the altercation) and 16 others left in a stretch Hummer limousine. One of the gang members sprayed the wrong vehicle with bullets, killing Williams instantly. Tri Tri Crips member Willie Clark was later sentenced to life without parole, plus 1,152 years.

July 16, 2006: Keith Davis shot in apparent car-jacking attempt

Dallas Cowboys safety Keith Davis was shot in the back of the head and in his right leg weeks before training camp while driving home on a Dallas highway.

Davis had been shot just before training camp three years previous, taking wounds in the elbow and hip during an altercation outside a Dallas area strip club.

July 28, 2005: Jerome McDougle shot during robbery attempt

Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive end and former University of Miami standout Jerome McDougle, 45, a Pompano Beach native, was shot in the abdomen during a robbery attempt in Miami. Four teens approached him in his car, police said, and shot him in the stomach. The teenagers were arrested soon afterward.

McDougle recovered and finished his career three years later with 37 combined tackles and three sacks.

Aug. 31, 2003: Joey Porter shot outside sports bar

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter, who also played for the Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals, missed two games after being shot in the buttocks during a confrontation outside a Denver sports bar. While he was one of six people shot, Porter had not been involved in the altercation, police said.

July 4, 2003: Terrence Kiel shot in attempted carjacking

San Diego Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was shot during an attempted carjacking as he was sitting in his car in a mall parking lot. Kiel was let go in 2007 after pleading guilty to felony and misdemeanor drug charges for shipping cough syrup with codeine into Texas.

July 6, 2000: Fred Lane killed by wife

Indianapolis Colts running back and former Carolina Panthers' fullback Fred Lane, 24, was shot twice with a shotgun by his wife Deidra in their Charlotte, North Carolina home. She claimed self-defense, as she said he burst into their house, armed and angry about his doubts over the paternity of their week-old daughter.

Friends and family testified about witnessing Lane's physical abuse. Prosecutors said she shot him once, then a second time at point-blank range after he was down, and accused her of killing him for the insurance. She pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to seven years and 11 months.

May 3, 1992: Shane Curry killed outside nightclub

Indianapolis Colts defensive end and former Miami Hurricanes player Shane Curry, 24, was shot and killed by a 15-year-old outside a Cincinnati nightclub during an argument over a blocked vehicle.
