Start of Yankees' game vs. Red Sox on Friday delayed due to weather at Fenway Park

BOSTON - Due to a steady rain Friday night, the start of the Yankees-Red Sox three-game series opener was delayed at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox announced a 7:40 p.m. approximate time for Friday's first pitch.

The tarp had been rolled onto the field at 5:30 p.m., an hour before the scheduled 6:30 p.m. start time, which was moved up a half-hour to accommodate fans wishing to watch the second half of the NBA Finals.

At Dallas, the Boston Celtics were poised for a sweep of the Mavericks, with Game 4 scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

The Yankees are scheduled to start Luis Gil (8-1, 2.04) against fellow right-hander Brayan Bello (6-3, 4.78).

Alex Verdugo is due to make his return to Fenway Park as a Yankee, having been traded last December for reliever Greg Weissert and two minor league pitchers.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone had Verdugo batting cleanup and starting in right field, switching Juan Soto to left field due to Verdugo's familiarity with the more expansive right field real estate and his Gold Glove caliber defense.
