Former Newbury Park High soccer goalkeeper Katie Meyer was found dead in her dorm room on the campus of Stanford University on Tuesday, the school has announced.

Meyer, 22, rose to national prominence as the heroine of Stanford’s NCAA women’s soccer national championship team in 2019, when she saved two penalty kicks in the decisive shootout against North Carolina.

A gregarious teammate and fierce advocate for women's athletics, the 5-foot-9 senior was studying international relations and history at the Palo Alto school.

She had twice been named to the Pacific-12 Conference's Fall Honor Roll.

The Star All-County selection was a 4.3 GPA student at Conejo Valley Unified School District's online school Century Academy, a U.S. youth international and also kicked on the Newbury Park High football team. She attended Century Academy and played at Newbury Park High.

Stanford announced Tuesday that an undergraduate student died “in an on-campus residence.”

Susie Brubaker-Cole and Bernard Muir, Stanford’s vice provost for Student Affairs and director of athletics, respectively, identified Meyer on Wednesday morning in a joint statement by the university.

“Katie was a bright shining light for so many on the field and in our community,” the statement reads. “There are no words to express the emptiness that we feel at this moment.”

No additional information was provided about Meyer's death. Officials with the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office said the cause and manner of her death were not yet available.

Reaction to Meyer’s death poured in locally and nationally.

Former Newbury Park High teammate Eden Quiroz posted on Instagram, "You are already so missed."

Several of Meyer's former club teammates honored her.

“You were always such a bright light in this world,” former Royal High star Zoe Hasenauer posted on Instagram, along with a team photo from their Real SoCal club days.

"Words can't describe how much I'll miss you," former Agoura High and Santa Clara defender Brit Pollard posted on Instagram. "Thank you for years of memories, constant laughs and for being the rock behind my back line. Rest easy superstar, I love you."

Former Moorpark High and Washington state goalkeeper Courtney Worstell played against Meyer on the club, high school and collegiate levels.

“You’ll forever be one of the best to do it,” Worstell wrote on her Instagram story. “I still can’t wrap my head around it and I don’t want to believe it.”

The Pac-12 Conference, NWSL and U.S. Soccer posted tributes to Meyer on Twitter.

“The thoughts and hearts of the entire U.S. Soccer Federation are with the family, friends, teammates and loved ones of Katie Meyer,” U.S. Soccer posted.
