College softball

The Mary Baldwin softball team finished in a three-way tie for third place in the USA South final regular-season standings and will face Southern Virginia Thursday, May 2, at 2:30 p.m. at Pfeiffer University in Meisenhimer, N.C., in the opening round of the 2024 conference playoffs.

The Fighting Squirrels, SVU and North Carolina Wesleyan all posted an 11-7 conference record to tie for third behind nationally-ranked Pfeiffer (13-2) and second-place Greensboro (13-5). The conference tiebreakers gave NC Wesleyan the third seed in the eight-team tournament, followed by MBU fourth and SVU fifth.

So after splitting a doubleheader in Staunton last Saturday, the Fighting Squirrels and Knights will play again on a neutral site Thursday. The winner will play Friday against the winner of Thursday's other first-round showdown - Pfeiffer vs. eighth-seeded William Peace at 2:30 p.m.  The losers of Thursday's games will play a knock-out game Friday at noon. Play will continue Friday and Saturday to determine a winner of that half of the conference playoff bracket.

In the other half of the tournament, NC Wesleyan, Methodist (9-9) and Meredith (8-10) will decend on Greensboro to battle it out to advance to the conference championship three-game series on May 10-11 (at the highest seed).
