Speedy Swoop: UNF men's golf grabs first-round lead at NCAA Rancho Santa Fe Regional

The University of North Florida men's golf team moved into pole position to qualify for the national championships, shooting a 3-under 277 for the first-round lead at the NCAA Rancho Santa Fe Regional held at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

Sixth-seeded UNF started rapidly and held a four-stroke lead early on, but finished one shot ahead of Oklahoma State and three shots ahead of California.

Osprey golfers Nick Gabrelcik and Davis Lee both shot a 2-under 68, tying for third on the individual leaderboard behind Sampson Zheng of California (66).

Andrew Riley (70), Jason Duff (71) and Robbie Higgins (75) rounded out the UNF lineup.

Osprey golfers led the field with 19 birdies but struggled on par-5 holes, on which they posted an average score of 5.30.

The three-round tournament continues through Wednesday, with the top five teams advancing to the national championships.
