Oakmont Regional players celebrate after outlasting Medfield, 5-3, in 12 innings for the Division 3 state baseball title at Polar Park.

WORCESTER — Fourth-seeded Oakmont scored twice in the top of the 12th inning Friday to snap a 3-3 tie and defeat No. 2 Medfield, 5-3, for the Division 3 state baseball championship in a thriller at Polar Park.

It was the first baseball state title in school history for Oakmont (23-3).

The Spartans' Caleb Allen opened the 12th inning with a walk, and Isaiah Smith singled. Oakmont's Ben Forbes drove in Allen with a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Spartans the lead, and Levi Hessel delivered a squeeze bunt to deliver Smith and extend the lead to 5-3.

Forbes was amazing on the mound, relieving starter Jaden Downing in the seventh inning and throwing six scoreless innings to keep Medfield (18-6) off balance. The junior also singled home a run in the seventh to rally Oakmont to a 3-3 tie.

The Spartans handed Warriors starter Jack Collins his first loss in two years. Collins, the Tri-Valley League MVP who enrolls at Union College in the fall, entered the game with a 19-0 mark over the past two seasons.
