SEC baseball power rankings after 4 weeks of conference play

This weekend in the SEC was a wild one, to say the least. Georgia won a series against Kentucky, Mississippi State beat Alabama on the road, and South Carolina and LSU tied.

Add to that the fact that Vanderbilt lost its first conference game of the season against Missouri while Texas A&M beat Auburn on the road, and you have yourself a wild weekend.

Mother Nature was the real winner of the series between LSU and South Carolina. The teams were only able to play two games and thanks to the heroics of Gavin Dugas, LSU was able to go home 1-1 instead of 0-2.

Here’s how the SEC teams stack up in this week’s power rankings.

Ole Miss (18-14, 2-10 SEC)

There is a new team at the bottom of the SEC rankings, and that is the Ole Miss Rebels. The Rebels are struggling big time. After losing two out of three to Arkansas last weekend, they lost their midweek game to Memphis Wednesday night at home.

Georgia (18-15, 3-9 SEC)

The ‘Dawgs surprised me this weekend. They went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the SEC, and they took the series against the No. 12 Kentucky Wildcats. Their losses to Clemson and Georgia Southern recently aren’t doing them any favors, though.

Mississippi State (20-14, 3-9 SEC)

When you are at the bottom of the SEC standings, the only way to go is up. Mississippi State went on the road last weekend and took down Alabama in two out of three games. The Bulldogs also won their midweek game against UAB on Tuesday night. Hopefully, they can carry that momentum into their series against Ole Miss this weekend.

Auburn (19-13-1, 4-8 SEC)

The highlight from this weekend on the Plains is Auburn retiring Frank Thomas’ number and unveiling his statue at Plainsman Park. They started off strong against Texas A&M by winning game one, but the Aggies fought back to take the series. Auburn lost to Georgia Tech in its midweek game. That won’t do the Tigers’ confidence any favors heading into their series against Alabama.

Alabama (23-10, 4-8 SEC)

After competing well against the Arkansas Razorbacks, I felt like Alabama was taking a step forward with its baseball program. The Crimson Tide followed that up by dropping a series, at home, to a team that was the worst team in the conference at that time. We’ll see how they do against Auburn this weekend.

Texas A&M (20-13, 5-7 SEC)

I was feeling a lot better about Texas A&M after its series victory on the road against Auburn, but then it put on a sleeper against UTSA on Tuesday night as it lost 5-1. The Aggies will host Missouri this weekend for a shot at redemption.

Missouri (21-11, 4-8 SEC)

Missouri handed Vanderbilt its first conference loss of the season and was one run away from taking the series. That impressive showing from the Tigers is what has them ranked this high right now. They’ll take on Texas A&M this weekend.

Kentucky (27-5, 9-3 SEC)

Although Kentucky’s social media team has been posting nothing but greatness, that didn’t transfer to the diamond as the Wildcats dropped a series on the road to Georgia. Kentucky will travel to Baton Rouge to take on No. 1 LSU this weekend.

Tennessee (23-10, 5-7 SEC)

Tennessee dropped a weekend series to Florida in Knoxville, and their schedule does not get any easier as they travel to Arkansas to take on the No. 5 Razorbacks.

Arkansas (26-7, 8-4 SEC)

If you need any more examples of how baseball can be a cruel game at times, look no further than the Arkansas Razorbacks. Arkansas took the weekend series from Ole Miss and Tuesday, it beat Little Rock 21-5. Wednesday was a different story, though, as Little Rock beat Arkansas 11-4.

South Carolina (29-4, 9-2 SEC)

South Carolina proved last weekend that it means business. The Gamecocks were a blown lead away from sweeping LSU in a two-game series. The heroics of Dugas eventually doomed them in Game 2. Carolina will travel to Nashville to take on a red-hot Vanderbilt team this weekend.

Vanderbilt (27-6, 11-1 SEC)

The Vandy boys finally lost a conference game as it dropped Game 2 to Missouri on the road. The Commodores won the rubber match to keep their conference streak alive, though. Vandy will play host to the South Carolina Gamecocks this weekend in what should be an incredible series.

Florida (28-6, 9-3 SEC)

The Florida Gators are exactly who we thought they were, a very good baseball team. They’ll take on Georgia before traveling to Columbia to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks.

LSU (27-5, 7-4 SEC)

When LSU needed a hero the most, Dugas showed up as usual. The Tigers had their backs against the wall and were in jeopardy of dropping the series to South Carolina but they pulled out the win. LSU will host No. 12 Kentucky this weekend.
