Rutgers baseball: Sonny Fauci cites culture, opportunity to start in choosing the Scarlet Knights
Las week, Rutgers baseball landed a commitment from Sonny Fauci in the transfer portal. It is an important addition for Rutgers as they look to bolster their options in their rotation as well as the bullpen.
A former pitcher at Old Bridge High School (Old Bridge, N.J.), Fauci is a former top-tier recruit who was the NJ.com Greater Middlesex Conference Player of the Year as a senior.
He played three years at St. John’s prior to joining Rutgers this week.
“Rutgers is a 15-minute drive from home so it’s a close spot for me,” Fauci told Rutgers Wire.
“Rutgers has a winning culture and that is something I want to be a part of and compete for my home state’s school. I feel it will be a great spot to develop and reach my goal to play professional baseball.”
This past year, Rutgers finished the season 35-23 and 14-10 in the Big Ten. An area of focus for this offseason for head coach Steve Owens and his program was to upgrade the bullpen.
Adding an experienced right-hander in Fauci is a step in the right direction for Rutgers. Fauci wants to help Rutgers and compete for a spot as a starter.
“(They) Said they think I could be a great piece to help continue the winning culture and consistency they have built at Rutgers and help me get to the next level,” Fauci said.
“My goal is to win an important role on the pitching staff like a starting role. As a team, a goal of mine is to win the Big Ten and make our way to Omaha.”
