Roundup: Utica baseball rallies past Newark Catholic

Gaige Spray’s walk-off single in the seventh inning Monday lifted the Utica baseball team to a 4-3 victory against visiting Newark Catholic in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.

Spray also scored a run for Utica (9-9, 7-5), which scored two in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, and Chase Bennett and Aidyn Burgess added a hit and a run apiece and Gavin Chinn a hit and an RBI. Bennett struck out five and allowed two earned runs in six five-hit innings, and Jarrett Hill threw a hitless seventh.

Owen Przymierski struck out four and allowed two earned runs in five-hitter for the Green Wave (7-11, 5-8). Troy Johnston had a double and two RBIs, and Mikey Hess added a double and an RBI and Miller Hutchison and Nate Willis a hit and a run apiece.

Granville slips past Watkins

Theo Talbott’s second RBI single of the night gave Granville a 2-1 victory in the bottom of the seventh inning against Watkins Memorial in LCL-Buckeye play at Denison.

Talbott finished with three hits, and Jacob Smith added two hits and a run and Jakob Culver a run for the Blue Aces (9-8, 6-5). Luke Bosse struck out six in four no-hit innings of relief, following Jackson McMillan, who struck out three in four shutout innings.

Austin Botts doubled for the Warriors (12-6, 8-3). Bradley Vincent struck out six and allowed one run in six innings.

Lakewood blanks Northridge

Jalen White recorded three hits, a run and an RBI for Lakewood in a 7-0 victory at Northridge in LCL-Cardinal play.

William Marrero added two hits, a run and two RBIs, Garrett Hardway a hit, two runs and an RBI and Carson Anderson a hit, a run and an RBI for the Lancers (13-6, 8-4). Carter Davis struck out seven without a walk in five three-hit innings.

Bridger Burcham allowed three earned runs in six innings for the Vikings (1-20, 0-12). He also reached base twice.

Heath beats Johnstown

Hayden Woodward’s two hits, two runs and four RBIs sent Heath to a 12-2 victory against visiting Johnstown in LCL-Cardinal play.

Woodward also struck out three and allowed one earned in five three-hit innings for the first-place Bulldogs (16-2, 10-1), who lead Lakewood by three games in the loss column and are ranked No. 6 in Division III in the latest Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association poll. Connor Corbett added two hits and three runs, Tannar Patterson a hit, two runs and two RBIs, Kaden Green two hits, a run and two RBIs and Conner Toomey two hits and two runs.

Jacob Myers led the Johnnies (6-11, 4-7) with a double and an RBI. Anthony Zrille added a hit and a run.

Valley cruises

Gunner Bowman doubled twice and drove in two runs as 11 players recorded RBIs for Licking Valley in a 16-0 victory at Zanesville (4-12, 1-9) in LCL-Buckeye play.

Trent Clark and Silas Kyle added two hits, a run and an RBI apiece, Brody Lambert a hit, two runs and two RBIs and Colby Hains a double, a run and two RBIs for the first-place Panthers (15-1, 9-1), who lead Watkins Memorial by two games in the loss column and ranked No. 8 in Division II in the latest state poll. Carter Sopher struck out three in two scoreless innings.

Newark rolls

Moses Crane tripled three times, totaling four hits, two runs and four RBIs, igniting Newark in an 18-6 victory at Central Crossing (4-16, 1-12) in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Tyler Flint homered and racked up three runs and three RBIs for the Wildcats (12-7, 9-4), and Aidan Hamilton and Carter Lovell added a hit and two runs apiece with Hamilton knocking in a run and Noah Edwards contributing two hits and a run. Cayden Vermilion struck out three in three innings.

GCA wins on road

Bentley Johnson was 4 for 4, piling up three runs and four RBIs in Granville Christian’s 14-3 victory at Tree of Life in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Andrew Benvie added two hits, two runs  and two RBIs, Jake Fabbro two hits, a run and an RBI and Gabe White two hits and two runs for the first-place Lions, who hold a one-game lead on Delaware Christian and Madison Christian ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Groveport to play Madison. Josh Benvie struck out six and allowed one earned run in four innings.

Liberty drops home game

Dawson Kamppi’s two hits and an RBI led Liberty Christian in an 8-3 loss to visiting Delaware Christian in MOCAL play.

Mason Kamppi added a hit, a run and an RBI and Caleb Windle a hit and a run for the Eagles (5-9, 3-6). Windle also struck out five and allowed no earned runs in 2⅓ innings of relief.

SOFTBALL

NC nips Utica

Kami Diaz’s two-run home run helped Newark Catholic outlast visiting Utica for an 8-7 victory in LCL-Cardinal play.

Maris Knowlton and Veronica Bailey added two hits, including a double, apiece with Knowlton knocking in a run and Bailey scoring one and Emma Lohri contributing a hit, two runs and an RBI for the first-place Green Wave (14-7, 9-4), who lead Lakewood by a game in the loss column. Avery Nagel struck out four and allowed one earned run in 3⅔ innings.

Lauren Schmitt led Utica (8-10, 6-7) with two hits and a run and Hannah Shaver added two hits and an RBI, Karleigh Lees a solo home run and Kaitlin Evans a hit, a run and an RBI.

Heath beats Johnstown

Kyndall Spicer homered and doubled as a part of a 4-for-4 day, scoring three runs and driving in two, fueling Heath in a 5-1 victory against visiting Johnstown in LCL-Cardinal play.

Kylie Green added two hits, including a double, and two RBIs, Savannah Lawson and Hannah Cash a hit and a run apiece and Sydney Cottrell a hit and an RBI for the Bulldogs (12-9, 7-6). Karli Staley struck out five and scattered eight hits.

Madison Holbrook, Ava Peterman and Aubrey Del Cecato notched two hits each for the Johnnies (5-17, 2-10).

Lakewood wins at Northridge

Rachel Crist and Jaycie Montie each homered, recording two hits, two runs and three RBIs apiece for Lakewood in a 12-2 victory at Northridge in LCL-Cardinal play.

Carly Williams racked up four hits, including a triple and a double, two runs and an RBI, and Becca Streets and Lauren Griffith added three hits apiece, combining for three RBIs for the Lancers (11-6, 7-5). Ashlyn Carder and Dani Stewart struck out three apiece.

Gracie Smith had a hit and a run and Camryn Moore a hit and an RBI for the Vikings (4-16, 2-11).

Valley wins on road

Chloe Cooperider’s three hits and three RBIs led Licking Valley in a 17-0 victory at Zanesville (0-18, 0-12) in LCL-Buckeye play.

Zoey Shaw added a hit, three runs and an RBI, Tori Baughman two hits, two runs and two RBIs and D’Neya Dennis two hits, a run and two RBIs for the Panthers (13-7, 7-4). Rylee Pitt struck out 13 in five one-hit innings.

Liberty falls

Katelyn Nestor had a hit and two RBIs for Liberty Christian in a 12-2 loss to visiting Delaware Christian in MOCAL play.

Megan Evenson added a double and a run, Madelynn Cox a hit and a run and Carolee Marcum two hits for the Eagles (0-8, 0-7).

BOYS TENNIS

Watkins wins again

Graham Smith at No. 2 (6-2, 0-6, 1-0) and Michael Hare at No. 3 (7-6, 1-6, 1-0) won singles matches to clinch Watkins Memorial’s 4-1 victory against visiting Upper Arlington B.

Liam Grennan (6-1, 6-4) at No. 1 singles and Gavin Adelman and Nathan Walter (7-5, 6-3) at No. 1 doubles also won for the Warriors (14-0).
