Roundup: Marshall girls hold off Harper Creek; Lakeview boys win big at Gull Lake

BATTLE CREEK — Marshall's girls basketball team enjoyed a win-win kind of night.

The Redhawks held on to get a win over their rival and were able to open conference play on the right foot.

Marshall held off Harper Creek for a 52-48 victory in Interstate 8 Conference girls basketball action on Friday at Harper Creek High School.

The Redhawks open their league schedule at 1-0 and bounced back from an opening night loss to improve to 1-1 overall.

"Excited to get our first conference win. It's fun to beat Harper Creek, at Harper Creek, in our first conference game," Marshall coach Taylor Sundell said.

The game was tight throughout with Marshall leading 24-22 at halftime. The Beavers were within a point in the final :05, but couldn't grab the lead.

Sundell credited Marshall's floor game with the victory as Emily Dingee led the Redhawks with 12 points while Sarah Couch and Brooke Carden each added 10.

"We were able to transition a lot better today and that's what we do well," Sundell said. "We weren't able to do that Tuesday. We were able to play our game more today."

Alyssa Smith and Camille Robinson each had 10 points to lead Harper Creek (0-2).

Kalamazoo Central 62, Battle Creek Central 42

BCC opened the season with a loss in Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference play. Myliyah Mosely had 12 points to lead the Bearcats with Kyliera Guest adding 11 and A'Mya Hodges chipping in nine.

Gull Lake 43, Lakeview 28

Gull Lake came away with this SMAC victory. Addison Woodrow had 11 points to lead Gull Lake and Bree Eklund added eight. Carson Howard had eight points to lead Lakeview.

Coldwater 48, Hastings 18

Coldwater led 21-8 by halftime and stays unbeaten on the season at 2-0. Elli Foley had 13 points and five assists for the Cardinals with Kenzie Schied adding 11 points and seven rebounds.

Colon 66, St. Philip 25

Colon jumped out to a 22-8 lead after the first quarter and won its league opener over rival St. Philip. Reese Williams had 20 points, six assists, five steals and seven blocks to lead Colon. Macey Burgess added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Addi Dzwik had 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Tigers.

Climax-Scotts 37, Athens 33

Climax-Scotts earns this SCAA victory and improves to 2-0. Kami Parlin and Maria Bronsink each had eight for points Athens, which goes to 0-1.

Portland 48, Olivet 19

Olivet falls to 1-1 with Olivea Gessner getting six points for the Eagles.

Bronson 53, Centreville 19

Aubree Calloway had 17 points and Brealynn Lasky added 14 points as Bronson toppled Centreville.

Boys Basketball

Lakeview 71, Gull Lake 44

Lakeview led 38-18 at halftime and improved to 1-0 overall with this Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference win. LeBron Campbell had 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds to lead the Spartans. Jacob Kucharczyk added 13 points, including two 3-pointers, and six rebounds and Bradyn McGill chipped in eight points and eight rebounds. Evan Kaiser and Kai Watts each had 10 points for Gull Lake.

St. Philip 57, Colon 43

St. Philip outscored Colon 23-11 in the third quarter to break open a close game. Jackson Dzwik had 18 points in the quarter to lead the Tigers. For the game, Dzwik had 34 points, including five 3-pointers, to help St. Philip improve to 2-1. Maverick Downs had 19 points, including three 3-pointers for Colon, which falls to 0-2.

St. Philip was coming off a 61-41 win over Calhoun Christian on Wednesday with Jackson Dzwik getting 26 points in that game and Carter Dzwik adding 21. Camden Smith and Micah Reed each had 15 points for Calhoun Christian.

Kalamazoo Central 61, Battle Creek Central 30

Battle Creek Central fell to 0-2 with a loss to rival Kalamazoo Central. Michael Mosley had nine points for the Bearcats with Josh Pittman adding eight.

Galesburg-Augusta 70, Delton Kellogg 58

Jeremiah Mann had 36 points, including five 3-pointers, for Galesburg-Augusta. Tyler Howland had 15 points to lead Delton Kellogg.

Coldwater 55, Hastings 44

Coldwater earned its first win of the season to improve 1-3. Ayden Dirschell had 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Cardinals.

Climax-Scotts 54, Athens 33

Climax-Scotts led 24-8 after the first quarter. Miles Shannon led the Panthers with 25 points, five rebounds and three blocks with Ivan Abad-Reyes adding 10 points.

Concord 55, Maple Valley 39

Concord led 30-18 at halftime to hand Maple Valley its first loss as the Lions fall to 4-1. Ayden Wilkes had 14 points and five rebounds to lead Maple Valley with Cam Carpenter chipping in eight points and nine rebounds.

Pennfield 52, Gull Lake 43

Pennfield led 25-16 at halftime and rolled to the non-conference win on Thursday. Calvin Paesans had 13 points and 11 rebounds with Brevin Bailey adding 13 points and five rebounds, and Jonathan Lake chipping in 10 rebounds and two blocks.

Olivet 63, Portland 49

Olivet improves to 2-1 with Bo Lincoln leading the Eagles with 22 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Tayven Feldpausch had 17 points for Olivet with Bryce Wine adding 16 points and four rebounds.

Hanover Horton 55, Homer 32

Homer falls to 1-2 as Tyson Garrett had 16 points to lead the Trojans in this Cascades Conference season opener.
