Roland-Story sports round-up: Norse win HOIC title in girls track and field

The Roland-Story girls placed first and the boys came in second at the Heart of Iowa Conference co-ed track meet May 4 at Saydel High School in Des Moines.

The Norse girls scored 150 points to beat out Prairie City-Monroe's score of 131 for first out of eight teams. The Roland-Story boys finished with 125 points to trail only Nevada's score of 157.

The Roland-Story girls also took third at the Comet Co-ed Invitational in Alleman May 1 with 102.66 points. The boys placed fifth with 76 points.

The Norse girls golf team shot a 369 as a team over 18 holes at the HOIC girls golf meet to place second May 3 at the Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center. Nevada won the conference title with a score of 349.

The Roland-Story girls also won both the North Polk triangular meet at the Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City with a 9-hole team score of 209 and the South Hamilton Invite with a 354 over 18 holes Friday at the Jewell Golf and Country Club.

Roland-Story placed sixth at the HOIC boys golf meet May 2 at Lincoln Valley with an 18-hole score of 385.

The Norsemen took fifth at the Comet Invite held at the Oakwood Golf Course in Conrad May 1 with a 366 over 18 holes. The boys placed fourth at the South Hamilton quadrangular May 4 after turning in an 18-hole score of 367 at the Jewell Golf and Country Club.

Here is what we learned from Roland-Story's busy week of high school sports competition.

Norse girls win seven events at HOIC track meet

The Roland-Story girls picked up seven gold medals at the HOIC meet.

Sprinter Kamryn Lande led the way. Lande won the 100-meter dash in 13.15 seconds and the 200 in 26.62.

Lande anchored Roland-Story to a win in the 4x200 relay and a runner-up finish in the 4x100. Adalyn Sporleder, Kennedy Petersen and Reagan Faber ran the first three legs in both relays, helping the Norse win the 4x200 in 1:47.44 and run a 51.26 in the 4x100.

Sporleder also led off Roland-Story's victorious sprint medley team and she won the long jump.

Faber, Petersen and Lauryn Kilstofte ran the final three legs of the sprint medley to help give Roland-Story a winning time of 1:53.82. Sporleder's winning distance in the long jump was 16 feet, 5.5 inches.

In distance events Claire Truesdell won both the 1,500 and 3,000 for the Norse girls. Truesdell finished the 3,000 in 11:46.78 and the 1,500 in 5:22.67.

Elizabeth Ihle and Mary Britten joined Petersen and Kilstofte in running a second-place time of 4:16.41 in the 4x400 relay. Mckenzie Crutchfield, Isabella Mazyck, Alli Janes and Ihle were runner-up in the distance medley with a 4:40.32 showing and Caitlyn Flattebo, Carly Halstead, Jaclyn Gessner and Selah Helgeson placed third in the shuttle hurdle with a time of 1:16.87.

Kilstofte placed third in the open 400 with a time of 1:03.97 and Ihle won a bronze medal in the 800 after running a 2:36.77. Laurel Osborn took third in the long jump with a jump of 15-4.

At the Comet Invitational Truesdell won the 3,000 in 12:24.13 and Sporleder took first in the long jump with a 15-10.25 effort. Helgeson was victorious in the 100 hurdles with a time of 1:18.86 and Gessner was second in 1:20.45.

Sporleder, Petersen, Lande and Kilstofte won the sprint medley in 1:57.44 and the same quartet took first in the 4x200 with a 1:52.31 showing. Crutchfield, Faber, Britten and Ihle won the distance medley in 5:01.29.

Osborn placed third in the long jump with a distance of 14-7 and Janes won a bronze in the high jump after jumping 4-10.

Roland-Story boys pick up 11 medals at HOIC meet

The Roland-Story boys track team won two events, placed second five times and took third on four occasions during the HOIC meet.

Kale Lande and Hesston Johnson placed first and third in the boys 400 with respective times of 50.38 and 51.40. The Norsemen 4x800 team of Lande, Johnson, Lucas Tjernagel and Brayden Kilstofte took first in 8:41.64.

Ben Greenfield and Kilstofte took second and third in the 800 with respective times of 2:04.84 and 2:08.44. Patrick Gonzales was runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 43-8 and Sam Knoll, Jake Berggren, Dillon Lettow and Greenfield finished second in the sprint medley after finishing in 1:37.28.

Berggren, Luke Patton, Jayden Strum and Cody Long placed second in the shuttle hurdle with a 1:06.66 effort and Heston McIlrath, Johnson, Greenfield and Lande were runner-up in the 4x400 after running a 3:25.55. McIlrath, Knoll, Berggren and Lettow placed third in the 4x200 with a time of 1:35.95 and the same four runners were third in the 4x100 after clocking in at 45.58.

The Roland-Story boys won three events, placed second once and third two times at the Comet Invitational.

Lande placed first in the open 400 with a time of 53.32 and McIlrath, Knoll, Johnson and Lettow came out on top in the 4x200 with a 1:35.37 showing. Patton, Berggren, Long and Strum won the shuttle hurdle in 1:08.72.

Greenfield, Kilstofte, Tjernagel and Boaz Clark took second in the 4x800 after finishing in 9:07.56. Lettow, Patton, Tjernagel and Kilstofte were third in the 4x400 with a time of 3:50.68 and Long earned a bronze medal in the long jump with a distance of 19-4.

Carlson sisters lead Roland-Story at HOIC girls golf meet

Brinley and Makenna Carlson led the Roland-Story girls golf team during its runner-up finish at the HOIC meet.

Brinley was the team's top golfer for the first time. She shot an 83 over 18 holes to finish as medalist runner-up behind Nevada's Olivia Axmear, who carded an 80.

Makenna took third individually after shooting an 85. Brooke Thompson tied for 12th with a 99 and Gabriella Wakefield tied for 15th with a 102 as the other golfers to turn in counted scores for the Norse.

Eva Corcoran shot a 102 to finish 17th and Grace Corcoran a 120 to tie for 27th.

Makenna dominated the North Polk triangular meet at TCI. She carded a 43 over nine holes to win medalist by five strokes.

Brinley came in third with a 51, Courtney Schreier tied for eighth with a 57, Kelsey Johnston took 10th with a 58 and Corryn Padget 15th with a 68.

The South Hamilton Invite saw the Carlson sisters win medalist and medalist runner-up. Brinley won with an 83 over 18 holes and Makenna shot an 84.

Eva Corcoran stepped up to place fourth with an 89 and Abby Cook, Wakefield and Thompson all tied for 11th with a 98. Grace Corcoran rounded out the Norse effort by tying for 17th with a 103.

Ben Greenfield paces Roland-Story boys golf team at the HOIC meet

To add to his productive week on the track, Greenfield turned in the top score for the Roland-Story boys golf team at the HOIC meet.

Greenfield finished in a three-way tie for eighth with an 18-hole score of 94. Braylen Loots tied for 12th with a 96 and Patrick Gomez shot a 97 to take 15th and Hayden Eslick a 98 to finish 16th and complete the Norsemen scoring.

Hayden Jassen shot a 100 to tie for 21st and Jack Birkland tied for 23rd with a 101 as the other Roland-Story golfers competing at the meet.

West Marshall's Luke Vawter won a card-back for medalist after finishing in a three-way tie for first with Greene County's Jack Hansen and Nevada's Kyle Kingsbury. All three golfers shot an 82.

Loots led Roland-Story at the Comet Invite with an eighth-place score of 79 over 18 holes. Janssen tied for 26th with a 95, Eslick, Gomez and Birkland tied for 29th with a 96 and Nels Hanson tied for 37th with a 100.

Loots also paced Roland-Story at South Hamilton. He tied for fourth with an 18-hole score of 85.

Hanson tied for 11th with a 92, Birkland and Janssen each carded a 95 to tie for 14th, Eslick tied for 19th with a 98 and Gomez took 23rd with a 104.
