Quad ailment scuttles A-Rod's planned return
An MRI performed Sunday revealed that Alex Rodriguez has a Grade 1 strain of his left quadriceps, and the third baseman will not rejoin the New York Yankees on Monday, the team announced Sunday.
It was reported earlier Sunday that Rodriguez would be back with the Yankees on Monday for the opener of a four-game series in Arlington, Texas, against the Rangers. However, he is now scheduled to return to Tampa, Fla., for rest and treatment. The team's press release said Rodriguez would not participate in the series vs. the Rangers, one of A-Rod's former teams.
Sunday was the final day of Rodriguez's 20-day window allowed for a rehab assignment. He will stay on the disabled list, but he cannot play in additional minor league games.
Because this is a new injury, the Yankees may lodge a request with Major League Baseball to allow Rodriguez to have an additional rehab stint.
Rodriguez, who will turn 38 on Saturday, has not played for the Yankees this season because he is recovering from hip surgery. He is 8-for-40 (.200) with two homers, eight RBIs and 11 strikeouts in his 13 minor league rehab games with three Yankees affiliates.
He also said he's not where he would like to be in terms of fielding or running the bases either.
