REC: Cougs offer speedy 2019 WR from Arizona

An unofficial visit to Pullman for this past weekend's big Pac-12 win over Oregon State paid dividends for 2019 Scottsdale (Ariz.) Notre Dame Prep WR Jake Smith.

Shortly after arriving at WSU, Smith was offered by Mike Leach, making the Cougars the third FBS program to offer Smith after Vanderbilt and Illinois.

Playing running back and wide receiver for Notre Dame Prep, Smith is putting up huge numbers. In a week 3 win over Desert Mountain, he amassed 336-yard all-purpose yards and four touchdowns. He had 163 yards rushing on 16 carries, and an additional 167 yards receiving.

Those kind of numbers are attracting big time attention from college evaluators, who are recruiting him as an athlete capable of playing multiple positions.

“College coaches are recruiting me at both running back and receiver,” Smith told Orange and Blue News, the Rivals.com site for Illinois. “It depends on the school and their need or preference. They like that I have good speed and acceleration. Several have also mentioned that I am fluid and have good ball skills.”

Hours after securing his first FBS offer from Vanderbilt of the SEC, Smith scored four touchdowns in NDP's 54-28 win over Phoenix St. Mary's on Sept. 8. Indiana has expressed interest as well.
