Quincy bangs out sweep over Bronson in Big 8 baseball battle

QUINCY – The Quincy Orioles and the Bronson Vikings have been rivals for a number of years, and only recently did that rivalry translate to a conference matchup. Now any time the two teams meet on the field of play, the games have huge Big 8 implications involved, whether it be football, basketball, baseball, softball, or wrestling.

Wednesday night the two teams met on the baseball diamond as both try to keep pace with the top of the Big 8 conference as the season comes to a close. Quincy got the edge Wednesday, defending home field with a two-game sweep over the visiting Vikings by scores of 4-2 and 11-3.

Game one was a scoreless affair until the Orioles put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth, giving Quincy the 3-0 lead. Bronson came back with two runs in the top of the sixth, however Quincy put the game away with an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to find the final score of 4-2. Quincy went on to take the win despite Bronson recording more hits, as the Vikings out hit Quincy 5-3 in the win while also taking advantage of four Quincy errors compared to two for Bronson.

Brennan Allman took the win on the mound for Quincy after throwing five innings in the start, allowing three hits and two runs, none earned, with three walks and five strikeouts.

Ryan Kempter notched the save, throwing two innings in relief, giving up just two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Jimmy Maynard led the Quincy offense with a pair of singles, an RBI and a run scored while Alex Barry added a single and a run scored.

Warner Wotta took the loss on the mound for Bronson after throwing five innings in the start. Wotta allowed three hits and three runs, only one earned, with four walks and five strikeouts.

Kestin Goodman had a double for Bronson while Wotta, Carson Stevens, and Reid Stukey all chipped in with singles.

Game two saw Quincy control things from the start, out hitting Bronson 13-2 enroute to the 11-3 win.

Mason Graves took the win on the mound for Quincy after throwing six innings in the start, allowing three hits and three runs, two earned, with no walks and two strikeouts.

It was Kempter leading the way at the plate for Quincy, finishing 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Also recording a multi-hit game was Ethan Copas, Grant Holroyd, and Mickey Connin, with Connin adding a double. Maynard smacked a double for Quincy while freshman Christian Craven added four RBIs in the win.

Goodman took the loss on the mound for Bronson after throwing four innings in the start, allowing seven hits and five runs, four earned, with three walks.

Goodman brought the big bat to the game for Bronson, helping his own cause at the plate with two hits, including his first home run of the year. Goodman added two RBIs and a run scored.

With the loss Bronson falls to 8-15 overall on the year while Quincy improves to 12-6 overall on year and 6-2 in the Big 8 conference.
