Prep roundup: Dramatic rally keeps Pinckney in SEC White baseball race

One of the most dramatic victories in recent Pinckney baseball history has the Pirates in the thick of the SEC White championship race.

Pinckney rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send its game against Tecumseh into extra innings, then won 4-3 on a walk-off single by Jonny Hoffmann.

Tecumseh took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs in the seventh, Zach Cortez hit a two-run double, then scored the tying run on a double by Owen Zylka.

In the ninth, Hayden Beaver was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Talon Koppmann bunted him to second before two walks loaded the bases. With two outs, Hoffman singled on a line drive to center field, bringing home Beaver with the winning run.

Landen Bauer pitched all nine innings for Pinckney, allowing six hits and no walks. He struck out six. All three Tecumseh runs were unearned. Bauer threw 103 pitches, 78 for strikes.

Pinckney and Tecumseh are tied for second place in the SEC White with 8-3 records, one game behind Adrian (9-2).

Pinckney will host Chelsea for a doubleheader Monday before playing a single game at Chelsea Wednesday. The Pirates will conclude SEC White play with a makeup game against Jackson May 20 at Pinckney. Adrian and Tecumseh have a three-game set next week.

The Pirates won the last two games of their three-game series with Tecumseh this week after losing 15 straight games to the Indians. Pinckney’s last victory over Tecumseh came in a doubleheader sweep May 19, 2017.

Pinckney improved to 12-8-1 overall after winning for the seventh time in the last eight games.

Canton 7, Brighton 5

Brighton 2, Canton 0

A two-run single by Chase Paskievitch in the bottom of the sixth inning and the shutout pitching of Parker Aten allowed Brighton to gain the split.

Aten allowed five hits and one walk in seven innings, striking out six. He lowered his earned run average to 1.50.

Cooper Andrzejewski and Lane Petit homered in the first game for the Bulldogs (14-8), while Carter Gregg went 3-for-4.

Girls lacrosse

Brighton 8, Hartland 7

Brighton extended its winning streak in its rivalry with Hartland to six consecutive games, the last three being one-goal decisions over Eagles teams that came in with a combined record of 35-3.

Hartland had a 12-1 record before Wednesday.

Georgia Gill had four goals, while Ella Toth and Cece Mainhardt had two each for the Bulldogs. Gabby Buckenberger had eight saves for Brighton.

South Lyon 17, Howell 0

Lydia Ilahi had 10 saves for Howell.

Softball

Pinckney 9, Ann Arbor Pioneer 3

Violet McWhinnie was 3-for-4 with two doubles for Pinckney (10-7), while Ayla Wright was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Canton 5, Brighton 1

Canton 12, Brighton 4

Lauren Damron hit a two-run homer in the second game for Brighton (10-15).

Soccer

Pinckney 2, Ypsilanti 0

Zaryah Griffin and Alexis Altizer scored for Pinckney.

Tennis

Brighton 9, Livonia Churchill 0

Brighton No. 3 singles player Sara Auty won 6-0, 6-0 to improve her record to 14-4.
