Prep highlights: Hartland wins KLAA 'B' tennis tourney; Howell captures No. 1 singles

Hartland won the Kensington Lakes Activities Association “B” girls tennis tournament, while Howell sophomore Estie Sura captured the No. 1 singles championship.

Sura cruised through the first two rounds, winning 6-1, 6-0 over Plymouth’s Lilliana Neme and 6-0, 6-0 over Dearborn Fordson’s Zena Ferris. In the championship match, Sura lost the first set 6-4 before rallying to win 6-2, 6-2 over Salem’s Annamaria Raftu.

Sura improved her record to 15-1.

Hartland scored 15 points to edge Salem by one in the eight-team tournament for teams that finished in places fifth through eighth in the KLAA’s two divisions. Howell was fourth with 11 points. Novi won the “A” tournament.

Hartland had three flight winners. Arianna Kinney won at No. 3 singles, Karissa Szczechowicz at No. 4 singles, and Leah Parrish and Zaylee Parrish at No. 1 doubles.

Howell’s Kelly Melby won 7-6 (3), 7-5 over Rachel Fraser of Hartland for the No. 2 singles title.

Track and field

Lutheran Westland Warrior Invitational

Charyl Stockwell’s boys won an invitational for the first time in the program’s five-year history.

The Sentinels scored 95 points to beat runner-up Garden City by 31 in the 14-team meet.

Mitchell Vaske won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.06 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 41.79 to lead Stockwell. Joe Vance was second in the 300 hurldes (41.80) and third in the 110 hurdles (16.69).

Stockwell was the only school to score in pole vault, with Nathan Vaske leading the way with a school-record leap of 12 feet. Jason Zarate was second and Andrew Frush third.

Konnor Golden was second in discus at 96 feet and fourth in shot put at 33-1.5. Merrick Abner was third in discus (95-0).

Anthony Urbaniak placed third in the 3,200 (10:49.44).

Stockwell’s 1,600 relay team of Vance, Adam Surowiec, EJ Worden and Seth Campbell took fourth in 3:47.86.

The Sentinels were 10th in the girls meet, led by Becka Lethorn’s second-place finish in pole vault (8-0). Rachel Lanning was fourth in the 400 (1:04.82) and Jordan Knight was fourth in the 100 hurdles (20.11).

Baseball

Hartland clinched a spot in the KLAA semifinals May 22 against Livonia Churchill or Livonia Franklin. The Eagles are in second place in the KLAA West at 9-3.

Michael Zielinski was 4-for-4 with three RBIs in the first game and pitched a three-hit shutout in the second game, striking out 11 and allowing no walks. Landon Brown drove in the only run with a groundout in the fourth inning.

Colton King pitched a six-inning five-hitter in the first game, striking out eight.

Hartland rallied to win the first game by tying the score on a single by Logan Berner in the sixth inning and winning on a walk-off single by Gannon Grundman in the seventh.

Eli Cheyne pitched three innings of scoreless one-hit relief in the second game, while Brady Quinn and Braxton Resky each drove in two runs.

Brighton 7, South Lyon 2

Brighton’s Luke Micunek pitched a three-hitter in the first game, striking out eight. Braeden Chiles and Cooper Andrzejewski each drove in two runs.

South Lyon scored three runs in the top of the first inning in the second game and held on, getting a strikeout with runners on first and second to secure the victory. Chiles pitched four innings of scoreless relief, striking out sixth. Lane Petit was 2-for-3 for eighth-ranked Brighton (17-7).

Lowell 16, Charyl Stockwell 4

Noah Piesko pitched a five-inning shutout against Webberville, striking out 11. Piesko is 5-1 with a 2.25 earned run average, striking out 45 batters in 28 innings.

Chris Petroski was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs, while Nolan Petroski drove in three runs for the Sentinels (12-10).

Teddy Gottbreht drove in two runs against Lowell.

Pinckney sophomore Nolan Carruthers stole six bases in the second game, the highest total ever by a Livingston County player among records submitted to the MHSAA. He had eight steals in the doubleheader, making him 25-for-26 on stolen base attempts this season.

Dale Westphal drove in three runs in the first game.

Softball

Hartland 5, Monroe St. Mary’s 0

Hartland 7, Saline 1

Hartland pitchers Olivia Forrest and Kylie Swierkos allowed only one run, one walk and six hits in 14 innings against two quality teams.

Forrest pitched a two-hitter, striking out five, against St. Mary’s. Abby Gardner was 2-for-3 for Hartland, which scored four first-inning runs.

Tenth-ranked Hartland (21-1-1) beat ninth-ranked Saline in the second game, with Swierkos pitching a four-hitter and fanning nine. Sadie Malik and Faith DeLanoy each drove in two runs.

Battle of the Bases

Howell (16-10) went 3-0 to win the tournament at Ypsilanti Lincoln. The Highlanders won 8-3 over Belleville, 16-0 over Saginaw Heritage and 9-4 over Lincoln.

Delaney Gillett pitched three no-hit innings, striking out five, against Belleville. Ava Lavery and Emma Banfield drove in four runs each against Heritage. Lainey Byrd was 4-for-4 and Erin Lowe 3-for-3 against Lincoln.

Mattawan 11, Brighton 2

Sydney Scoggins was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, hitting a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to give Brighton a 3-0 lead in the second game.

Ava Heaney doubled home both runs in the first game for Brighton (3-20).

Boys lacrosse

Hartland 15, Forest Hills Central 3

Hartland easily won a clash between the defending state champions in Divisions 1 and 2, improving to 15-2.

Drew Lockwood scored six goals and one assist, Jacob Ross two goals and four assists, Gavin Preston two goals and one assist, and Joey Mattord two goals for the Eagles.

Girls lacrosse

Brighton 16, Midland 4

Cece Mainhardt scored six goals for Brighton. Georgia Gill and Mikayla Guyette each scored twice, while Kaia Malachino had a goal and four assists.
