Plainview, West End top Gadsden area high school softball top 5 for week of March 27

A week after the debut of the Gadsden Times rankings, there is little change in the Gadsden Times top-5 softball teams, even after the Etowah County softball tournament.

Each week, the Gadsden Times will rank the top five teams in the area, which is one of the strongest in the state with two-time defending 3A champion Plainview along with other top teams in each class.

The high school softball season started in mid-February but some teams, for a variety of reasons, took a few weeks to get to full strength between weather and basketball wrapping up as March began.

Here's the top-5 teams, regardless of class in the Gadsden area for results through March 26:

1. Plainview (11-3)

Why: Plainview has gotten a bunch of games going as of late, beating a bunch of teams in and out of the state.

2. Southside (16-5-1)

Why: The Panthers had a strong week, outside of the Etowah County tournament where they got beat by Hokes Bluff. Wins against Rehobeth and Moody help the move up.

3. Boaz (15-2-1)

Why: While Boaz hasn't played since the last poll, they still get the bump up due to other results around the area.

4. West End (11-3-1)

Why: The Patriots are undefeated no more but the losses are to some of the top teams at bigger schools, so they still stay in the rankings.

5. Hokes Bluff (10-7-1)

Why: The Eagles earned a strong upset over Southside, but other results hurt their chances to move up this week but they stay in the rankings at the No. 5 spot.

Others teams considered: Etowah, Spring Garden
