Penguins sign D Oleksiak for three years, $6.4M

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed restricted free-agent defenseman Jamie Oleksiak to a three-year, $6.4 million contract extension, the team announced Thursday.

The two sides will avoid an arbitration hearing scheduled for July 28.

Oleksiak, 25, made just less than $1 million last season. The Penguins acquired him from the Dallas Stars for a conditional third-round pick in December. Oleksiak had spent parts of six NHL seasons with the Stars, who drafted him 14th overall in 2011.

Oleksiak recorded four goals and 10 assists with a plus-13 rating in 41 games for the Penguins last season, bringing his season totals to five, 12 and plus-7, respectively. He averaged 17:24 of ice time per game in Pittsburgh, up 2:24 from his average before the trade.

In 140 career games, Oleksiak has seven goals and 15 points with a minus-23 rating.
