Packers K Mason Crosby misses 5 kicks in 8-point loss to Lions

It was an ugly Sunday for Green Bay Packers fans.

Mason Crosby fantasy owners might want to look away.

The Packers kicker missed five of his kicks in a 31-23 loss to the Detroit Lions. When his 56-yard attempt with 2:13 remaining missed wide right, the game was essentially over and Crosby had wrapped up one of the most dubious kicking days in recent NFL memory.

Crosby has most missed field goals since 2010

In total, Crosby finished 1-for-5 on field goals and missed an extra point to boot. His only make was a meaningless 41-yarder with seven seconds remaining. His misses came from 41, 42, 38 and 56 yards.

It’s the kind of game that can get the 12-year Green Bay veteran concerned for his job.

According to Fox Sports, the last time an NFL kicker missed four field goals in one game was Dan Carpenter in 2010. His Dolphins lost, 17-14, that day to the Buffalo Bills.

“I’ve done this a long time, and I’ve never had a game like that,” Crosby said after the game. “This is uncharted territory.”

Packers struggles extended beyond Crosby on Sunday

The Packers struggled to get the ball in the end zone, but dominated the ball on Sunday, outgaining the Lions in yards from scrimmage, 521-264. But Detroit opened up a 24-0 halftime lead when Green Bay failed to score on offense or in the kicking game.

Three lost fumbles – two of them by quarterback Aaron Rodgers – didn’t help the Packers’ cause either. Rodgers led a rally that ultimately came up short in the second half, totaling 442 yards and three touchdowns in the air. But it wasn’t enough to overcome the many mistakes Green Bay made on Sunday.

There’s plenty of blame to go around in Green Bay. It’s not fair to pin an entire loss on Crosby. But missing five kicks in an eight-point loss is a brutal way to go out.
