One-time Saints RB Adrian Peterson to sign with the Lions

The Adrian Peterson era wasn’t exactly glamorous for the New Orleans Saints, with the venerable running back getting traded to the Arizona Cardinals early in the 2017 season. He’s since bounced around the league a bit and was recently released by the Washington Football Team, only to land with the Detroit Lions a few days later.

And that puts him on a collision course with the Saints. The Lions will host New Orleans on Sept. 27 at Ford Field in a game played without fans in attendance, and Peterson just might get on the field. The hurdles ahead of him include young draft picks Kerryon Johnson and D’Andre Swift, though injuries have hit the Lions depth chart hard.

It’s possible Peterson gets some real minutes against a stingy Saints run defense, which hasn’t allowed a single-game 100-yard rusher in 43 consecutive matchups. Peterson still had some juice last season, running for 100-plus yards in two games against the Miami Dolphins (totaling 113 yards in 23 attempts on the ground) and the Buffalo Bills (108 rushing yards on 18 carries). He doesn’t have the same electricity to his game as he boasted with the Minnesota Vikings, but Peterson may still have plays left in him.
