Final: Oklahoma State tops Kansas 39-32

With Alex Hale's 42-yard field goal with 15 seconds to play, Oklahoma State finished off a 39-32 victory over Kansas on Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium.

The Cowboy defense came up with two turnovers and two fourth-down stops down the stretch to seal the victory, improving OSU to 4-2 on the season

Fourth quarter: Oklahoma State scores to take lead vs. Kansas

Brennan Presley went in motion behind quarterback Alan Bowman, who quickly handed off to the OSU receiver.

Presley got into space and found the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown that put the Cowboys up 36-32 with 2:33 left in the game.

The possession was set up with a fourth-down stop by the OSU defense in which linebacker Collin Oliver stripped the ball from quarterback Jason Bean near midfield.

Fourth quarter: Dylan Smith gets first career interception

Playing in just the second game of his career, OSU true freshman safety Dylan Smith came up with the first interception of his career as OSU tried to wipe out Kansas’ 32-30 lead early in the fourth quarter.

OSU defensive end DeSean Brown, a redshirt freshman from Choctaw, did not rush on the play, but sunk back into the area he anticipated the throw going. He jumped and tipped the pass, which was caught by Smith.

A product of Little Elm, Texas, Smith did not play in the first four games of the season. Recruited as a cornerback, Smith moved to safety earlier this year.

Fourth quarter: Cowboys turn to Hale again

OSU reached the Kansas 3-yard line but came up with only a field goal, cutting the Jayhawk lead to 32-30 with 11:32 to play.

It was the Cowboys’ third red-zone trip to end in a field goal after scoring touchdowns on their first two red-zone opportunities.

Kicker Alex Hale is 3-for-3 on the day, all inside of 30 yards.

Third quarter: Kendal Daniels with goal-line pick

Oklahoma State safety Kendal Daniels came up with his first interception of the year in a much-needed time.

The redshirt sophomore stepped inside the receiver he was covering to make a leaping grab at the goal line with Kansas trying to add to its 32-27 lead late in the third quarter.

It was OSU’s first takeaway of the day and their first red-zone stop in Kansas’ only trip inside the 20-yard line so far.

Third quarter: OSU’s Alex Hale good again

Alex Hale converted his second field goal try of the day, a 26-yarder, after OSU’s offense stalled in the red zone for the second time on the day.

That pulled OSU within 32-27 at the 5:28 mark of the third quarter.

Now, the emphasis turns to the OSU defense and it’s need to stop big plays.

Third quarter: Kansas extends lead with another long TD

Aligned in the slot to the left, Kansas receiver Quentin Skinner ran past OSU safety Trey Rucker and got open for a 42-yard touchdown pass from Jason Bean, the quarterback’s fifth.

KU added the extra point — which hadn’t been a given in the first half — for a 32-24 lead with 11:13 left in the third quarter.

Kansas’ touchdown passes have covered yardages of 47, 30, 44, 49 and 42 yards.

Halftime: KU with a 1-point edge

Big plays and missed extra points were the difference at halftime with Kansas holding a 25-24 lead at the break.

Oklahoma State drove into KU territory on its final possession but stalled after a pair of incomplete passes. Out of field goal range on a windy day, the Cowboys punted and Kansas ran out the clock to end the half.

OSU finished the half with 348 total yards to 321 for Kansas, each team striking with big plays. Five of the seven first-half touchdowns from both teams went for 30 yards or more. OSU blocked two Kansas extra-point attempts and missed a two-point conversion pass.

Second quarter: KU goes deep again

Yet another big pass play put Kansas back on top.

Quarterback Jason Bean looked to be in trouble as he slid out of the pocket, but just before an OSU defender hit him, he lofted a deep throw to Quentin Skinner, who got behind the defense for a 49-yard score and a 25-24 Kansas edge with 1:06 left in the first half.

For the game, Bean is 13-of-17 for 274 yards and four TDs.

Second quarter: Gordon pops a big one

OSU running back Ollie Gordon scored his second touchdown of the day when he slipped through a hole in the middle of the Kansas defense, ran through a couple of arm tackle attempts and went 42 yards for the score.

That put the Cowboys back on top 24-19 and brought Gordon’s yardage output to 170 for the day with 2:52 left in the first half.

Gordon has five receptions for 97 yards and eight rushes for 73, with one touchdown each way.

Second quarter: OSU’s Dalton Cooper likely out for game

Starting left tackle Dalton Cooper, who has been Oklahoma State’s most reliable blocker the last couple games, left late in the first quarter with an undisclosed injury.

The Cowboy Radio Network reported that Cooper is unlikely to return to the game.

In response to the injury, Oklahoma State moved starting right tackle Jake Springfield to the left side and Cole Birmingham entered at right tackle.

Second quarter: Kansas pulls into the lead with another easy TD

Mason Fairchild ran right past an OSU linebacker and safety to get open behind the defense and it was as easy a pitch and catch as you’ll see.

Jason Bean lofted the ball to his uncovered tight end for a 44-yard touchdown to put the Jayhawks up 19-17 in the early minutes of the second quarter.

Fairchild has four catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Second quarter: Another big KU passing TD

Kansas quarterback Jason Bean connected with Mason Fairchild on a 30-yard touchdown pass that cut the Cowboy lead to 17-13 early in the second quarter.

It was the second passing TD of 30 yards or more for the Jayhawks, though their extra point was blocked.

For the game, Bean is 8-of-9 passing for 139 yards with two TDs.

First quarter: Cowboys take early command

Oklahoma State scored on its first three possessions, with two touchdowns and a field goal, to take a 17-3 lead late in the first quarter against Kansas.

The Jayhawks’ Trevor Wilson got open for a 47-yard touchdown catch to account for their only points.

OSU quarterback Alan Bowman threw for 203 yards, completing 13 of 16 throws on the first three possessions. Ollie Gordon had four catches for 85 yards with a touchdown, and Brennan Presley had a 20-yard TD catch.

Alex Hale continued his impressive start to the season with a 28-yard field goal.

Cowboys arrive in Terry Miller tribute jerseys

Oklahoma State is not dealing with new injuries as it enters its game against Kansas, set for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium.

The players arrived at the stadium wearing orange No. 43 jerseys as a tribute to former running back Terry Miller, who will be inducted into the Ring of Honor at halftime.

Miller is the fourth former Cowboy player — all running backs — to be inducted into the Ring of Honor, joining Thurman Thomas, Barry Sanders and Bob Fenimore.
