Ohio high school football: Who won in Week 8? Scores, quick hits from Columbus-area games

We have reached crunch time in the high school football regular season. For many teams, Week 8 was crucial in terms of a league title race, playoff computer points or both.

We covered two games that fell into the both category, with Frank DiRenna at the CCL showdown between DeSales and Hartley and Dave Purpura at the OCC-Capital battle between Westerville South and Canal Winchester.

Canal Winchester, ranked sixth in our Super 7 poll and the Division II state poll, put its undefeated record on the line.

Colin Gay also covered the OCC-Capital game between Westerville North and Big Walnut.

DeSales' Bryce Herrick is tackled by Hartley's Joey Wooten (9) and Rory Ralston (43) during Friday night's game at Hartley. The host Hawks won the CCL contest 15-12.

Friday quick hits

Hartley 15, DeSales 12

  • A four-year player on the Hartley boys soccer team, Conner Bjornson decided to give football a try in his senior year. The move paid off Friday as Bjornson’s 32-yard field goal as time expired lifted the host Hawks (6-2, 1-1) to the CCL win. Hartley began the game-winning drive at its 15-yard line and used an effective ground game and timely passes to move into field-goal position. Bjornson’s line drive kick cleared the crossbar and set off a celebration. “It was my own decision to join the football team,” said Bjornson, who primarily plays defender in soccer. “I went to (football coach Brad Burchfield). I’ve been practicing a lot on my own and I asked Burch once I decided to do it, and I just kept working on it.”

  • Sophomore running back Robert Lathon led Hartley's offense, rushing for 171 yards on 20 carries. Matt Galich connected with Ryan Perry for touchdown passes of 30 and 35 yards to give Hartley a 12-6 lead early in the third quarter. Hartley failed on an extra-point attempt and two-point conversion. “It was a typical, hard CCL game,” Burchfield said. “The teams know each other. Every inch is like a mile. The kids are really tough and really physical. It’s a tough ballgame.”

  • Pinned deep in its own territory early in the fourth quarter, DeSales got the big play it needed when Avery Garlock broke free for a 94-yard run, setting up Max Shulaw’s 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 12 with 8:20 remaining. DeSales failed on both of its extra-point attempts.

  • Trailing 6-0 midway through the second quarter, the Stallions (3-5, 1-1) tied the game on Wyatt Mauger’s 18-yard interception return for a score. DeSales is guided offensively by freshman quarterback R.J. Day, the son of Ohio State coach Ryan Day. “The guys played with a lot of heart,” DeSales coach Ryan Wiggins said. “It’s a hard-fought game. It could have gone either way. They played tough (and did) all the things that you ask them to do. Hartley made a play at the end and that was the difference.”

Canal Winchester 35, Westerville South 14

  • The host Indians picked the perfect time to get their first win in seven tries against the Wildcats, and that has multiple meanings in the context of Friday’s win. Sophomore defensive back Brody Harmon had two of Canal Winchester’s three interceptions — senior linebacker Harlee Hanna had the other — as the Indians remained undefeated (8-0 overall, 5-0 OCC-Capital) in the wake of climbing to sixth in the Division II state poll. The defense forced seven negative-yardage plays and held South to three or fewer yards six more times, and Iverson Klusman blocked a punt that led to the first of Kaseem Wade’s three rushing touchdowns shortly before halftime. “The guys know we’re not unbeatable, but they’re tight and that is making us a special team,” coach Jake Kuhner said. “Our defense came through and it was in big situations. The OCC (-Capital) has run through South for a long time. … We rallied around each other.”

  • Harmon, a 5-foot-10, 170-pounder who now has four interceptions on the season, credited his second-half performance to a few missed assignments in the first half. “Coaches got on me because of the mistakes I made. … I kept chasing the outside route when they would go inside, and I learned a little bit from that,” Harmon said. “Most of their routes inside were more of a slant, so we saw when he hit the outside read, we knew it was a fake and he was just going to come inside. We read (South quarterback Dominic Birtha) really well.” Harmon had interceptions earlier this season against New Albany — which he returned for a touchdown — and Dublin Scioto.

  • Wade paced the ground game with 162 yards on 24 carries and scored on three consecutive possessions bridging halftime. He scored from a yard out with 21 seconds left in the second quarter and from 27 and 5 yards on Canal Winchester’s first two possessions of the third. The Indians’ other touchdowns erased an early 7-0 deficit. Corey Howard, who was hampered the past few weeks by injury, scored on a 12-yard run halfway through the second quarter, and on the next possession Maxton Brunner hit Karson Martino in stride for a 36-yard score to make it 14-7. Howard added 95 yards on 13 carries and Canal Winchester rushed for 310 as a team.

  • Highlights were few for South (4-4, 3-2) after its 10-play, 65-yard drive to start the game culminated in Birtha’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Jeramiah McDuffie. The two later connected for a 72-yard score in the fourth quarter, but between those several passes seemed on target but often glanced off receivers’ hands or were a few steps off. “We had a lot of opportunities that if we capitalized, it would have been a different football game, but that’s kind of been the theme of our season in our losses,” coach Matthew Christ said. “We have two weeks left (in the regular season) to figure out who we want to be. Then we’ll see what we do with that.”

Westerville North 23, Big Walnut 12

  • The visiting Warriors (6-2, 3-2 OCC-Capital) stormed back late to upend the Golden Eagles (3-5, 2-3), scoring 14 unanswered points in the final minute of the fourth quarter. With less than three minutes to go at the Big Walnut 2-yard line, North’s Brian Robinson was stopped at the line of scrimmage, turning the ball over on downs. After the Warriors’ defense kept Big Walnut's offense inside its own 5-yard line, the Golden Eagles elected to concede a safety, leading to North getting a chance at midfield with a 12-9 deficit. But all North quarterback Ronald Jackson needed was one play, throwing a 50-yard heave to Tyler Goebeler for the go-ahead score. Robinson then sealed the deal defensively, taking a tipped pass for an interception and returning it for a touchdown.

  • For North coach Stanley Jackson Sr., the go-ahead touchdown pass was the kind of play he has seen before from Ronald, his son. "This is something he's been doing for a while," Stanley Jackson said. "He's been training for this. When he was a third grader throwing in flag football, he would throw 30 times a game, but some of it is just what you have in you. Some kids just panic, but he doesn't. I think he understands what he can do."

  • North had lost to Westerville South and Canal Winchester the previous two weeks. "It feels amazing," said Robinson, a defensive end/tight end who committed to Kentucky on Wednesday. "There's no feeling like it, especially coming off of two losses. This is a very big win for this team, and for me as well. But these guys deserve it." The Warriors host winless Worthington Kilbourne next week. Big Walnut saw its two-game winning streak end, having beaten Franklin Heights and Kilbourne. The Golden Eagles will try to rebound against Dublin Scioto next week at home.
