Alabama dominates early, holds off Texas A&M 27-19
It’s going to get pretty boring watching Alabama win like this for the next few weeks.
That’s assuming the Crimson Tide’s 27-19 victory over Texas A&M is an indication of what’s to come. Because if it’s anything like what Alabama displayed in College Station, the only thing we’re going to be left wondering just how many points the Tide will win by.
Against an Aggies team on a four-game win streak, that number was eight only by the grace of freshman quarterback Kellen Mond, who spent his second half trying out his best Johnny Manziel impersonation.
That touchdown in the late in the third quarter made things interesting for a moment, but by the time the Aggies could do any more damage, the game was all but over.
Mond finished his day 19 for 29 passing with 237 yards, one touchdown and one interception. That’s an admirable day for the freshman. But it doesn’t compare to the numbers his opponent put up.
Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts went 13 for 22 with 123 yards and a touchdown passing, plus another score on the ground. Led by Damien Harris (124 yards, one touchdown) and Bo Scarbrough (55 yards), the Tide ran 44 times for 232 yards.
So who can stop Alabama? Well, we might not be finding out any time soon — if at all. The Tide’s toughest test all year won’t come until the Iron Bowl in the season finale. If No. 12 Auburn remains as phenomenal as we’ve seen already this year, that could give us a truly spectacular game.
Until then, Alabama gets to face, in order, Arkansas, Tennessee and LSU all at home. Then it gets Mississippi State on the road followed by a “tune up” game against Mercer one week before the Iron Bowl.
This is what happens when you have arguably the best team in college football housed in arguably one of the worst divisions in any power five conference.
No one has scored more points on Nick Saban’s team this year than Texas A&M did on Saturday. If any school remaining on Alabama’s schedule — outside of Auburn — can replicate that, we’ll be seriously shocked.
Until then, the only thing college football fans can get excited about in the SEC West is the Iron Bowl.
