Nashville Predators should learn first-round NHL playoffs opponent after Wednesday's games

The Nashville Predators should learn their first-round opponent in the Stanley Cup Playoffs late Wednesday night.

With the Predators already locked into the first wild card position, they will either play the Vancouver Canucks or the Dallas Stars in the first round of the NHL playoffs best-of-7 series. The Edmonton Oilers were eliminated as a possibility with the Canucks' 4-1 win over Calgary on Tuesday.

The result of Wednesday's matchup between the Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues may decide whether Nashville heads to Vancouver or Dallas when the playoffs begin on April 20.

If the Stars gain at least one point over the Blues, they lock up the No. 1 seed, sending Nashville to Vancouver to play the No. 2 seed Canucks.

If the Stars lose in regulation to the Blues, the Canucks could snag the No. 1 seed if they beat the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday. If that happens, the Predators would take on the Stars in the first round.

According to Sport Club Stats, as of Wednesday, the Predators have a 91% chance of playing the Canucks in the first round, and a 9% chance of playing the Stars.

Dallas should be motivated to gain at least a point over St. Louis on Wednesday. The No. 1 seed would allow them easier travel in the first two rounds of the playoffs. Plus they would likely face the Los Angeles Kings, a team they swept 3-0 in their season series.
