MLB notebook: Dodgers SS Seager (elbow) out for season

Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star shortstop Corey Seager will miss the remainder of the season after being diagnosed on Monday with a right ulnar collateral ligament sprain that will require Tommy John surgery.

The Dodgers placed Seager, 24, on the 10-day disabled list due to the ailment and recalled infielder Breyvic Valera from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Seager, who has also been battling a hip injury, has hit .267 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in 26 games this season.

Elbow issues first surfaced for Seager last summer, though he was advised by the team not to undergo surgery after having an MRI in the offseason. His winter strengthening program delayed the beginning of his throwing at spring training, and he instead was used as a designated hitter before moving back to the field.

"I had a few bad throws over the weekend and went and got an MRI this morning," Seager told reporters. "It was necessary to have surgery now."

--Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Robbie Ray, who strained a right oblique muscle on Sunday, was placed on the 10-day disabled list.

An MRI exam Monday revealed a Grade 2 (moderate) tear. The timetable for Ray's return is unknown.

The Diamondbacks replaced Ray on the roster by recalling right-hander Silvino Bracho from Triple-A Reno. Ray, 26, is 2-0 with a 4.88 ERA in six starts this season and has 45 strikeouts in just 27 2/3 innings.

--San Francisco Giants second baseman Joe Panik will miss six weeks after undergoing left thumb surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament.

Panik was hurt Friday when his glove was hit by the left leg of the Los Angeles Dodgers' Yasiel Puig on a pickoff play at second base.

Alen Hanson, called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday when Panik went on the 10-day disabled list, is likely to split time at second base with Kelby Tomlinson. Panik, 27, is hitting .267 with three homers and five RBIs through 23 games this season.

--The Toronto Blue Jays placed outfielder Randal Grichuk on the 10-day disabled list due to a sprained right knee.

Grichuk is expected to miss at least three weeks after an MRI exam revealed a Grade 1 sprain in his posterior cruciate ligament. Toronto recalled utility infielder Gift Ngoepe from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move.

Grichuk sustained the injury on a diving play during the Blue Jays' 7-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Sunday. He remained in the game, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, before complaining of soreness later in the night that prompted the MRI.

--New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes says he expects to miss three days after injuring his left thumb on Sunday.

Cespedes was slated to undergo an MRI exam after X-rays taken Sunday were negative.

Cespedes, 32, is batting .233 with six home runs and 25 RBIs but also has struck out a National League-worst 43 times in just 103 at-bats.

--The Rangers placed Martin Perez on the disabled list as the left-hander continues to experience issues with his surgically repaired non-throwing elbow.

The move comes one day after Perez served up three homers and allowed four runs in four innings in a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Texas recalled right-hander Jose Leclerc from Triple-A Round Rock to fill the roster opening.

Perez underwent surgery on the right elbow in December. He broke a bone in a fall after being startled by a bull on his ranch in Venezuela.

--Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett, the team leader in hits, has a sore right throwing shoulder and wasn't in the starting lineup against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman said Gennett would "certainly" be available to pinch-hit.

Gennett, who had started all but one of the team's first 28 games, has been dealing with the soreness since spring training, when he made a dive for a ball, Riggleman said.
