Michigan State falls to Duke: Score, highlights from Spartans' Champions Classic game

Mike Krzyzewski is no longer roaming the sideline but, yet again, Michigan State and Tom Izzo came up short against Duke.

Tyson Walker scored a game-high 22 points, 18 of which came in an inspired second-half performance, but the Spartans were unable to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit in a 74-65 loss against the Blue Devils in the Champions Classic.

The most recent loss dropped Michigan State to 4-15 all-time against Duke, with Izzo’s record against the Blue Devils falling to 3-14.

The No. 19 Spartans trailed by double digits for stretches of the second half, but got within three on a Malik Hall layup with 6:07 remaining. From there, though, No. 9 Duke scored five unanswered and never led by fewer than six for the rest of the night.

Hall finished with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Jaden Akins was the third and final Michigan State player to finish in double figures, scoring 11, along with eight rebounds.

Duke attempted 30 free throws to the Spartans’ 12 and capitalized on that disparity, sinking 24 of its attempts from the charity stripe.

With the loss, Michigan State falls to 1-2 on the young season, marking the first time it has been under .500 through its first three games since the 2016-17 season. That year, a Spartans team that was No. 9 in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll went 20-15 and lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Walker, a preseason first-team all-Big Ten selection, made seven of his 12 shots in the second half. His outing was reflective of his team’s: Michigan State fell behind 31-20 at halftime largely behind an anemic offense that made just nine of its 31 shots in the opening 20 minutes (29%) before finding its rhythm offensively in the second half, shooting 53.1% from the field and making four of its six 3-pointers.

But whenever Michigan State would threaten, Duke would find a way to counter. The Blue Devils were guided in the second half by freshman Caleb Foster, who scored 16 of his team-high 18 points in the final period and knocked down four of his five 3s.

Michigan State vs. Duke updates, highlights

Final: Duke 74, Michigan State 65

9:16 p.m.: That'll do it. Michigan State looked much better in the second half, but that final 10 minutes of the first half absolutely killed it tonight. Defensive was lacking at many points in the second half, as well, strong as it was for much of the first. Spartans fall to 1-2 on the young season.

9:11 p.m.: A Roach mid-range jumper off a crossover puts Duke up 10 and Walker follows it up with an errant shot off the side of the backboard. With 40 seconds left, that should do it.

9:08 p.m.: Cooper fouls out with 1:21 left and the Spartans trailing by eight.

9:01 p.m.: Duke is starting to put this game on ice. Filipowski was doubled on the low post and found Foster on the opposite side of the court for an open 3. Then with 1:55 left, Foster drains another 3. Blue Devils are up 12 with 1:52 left.

8:58 p.m.: Walker has been a man possessed in the second half. The Northeastern transfer has 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

8:55 p.m.: Michigan State had it down to three, but Duke goes up eight on a pair of Ryan Young free throws, which came off a really questionable foul call on Sissoko. Crowd wasn't happy with it, understandably so.

8:51 p.m.: Cooper just picks up his fourth foul with about 5:30 left. Sissoko comes in for him. Cooper has a team-high eight rebounds tonight.

8:49 p.m.: Malik Hall checks back in with 7:08 left. Four fouls for the Spartans' No. 2 scorer tonight

8:44 p.m.: Tyson Walker, my goodness! He has two 3s in the past 1:18 and had the assist on Michigan State's other possession, using a pick to split a pair of Duke defenders and toss up a lob to Coen Carr for a slam. Spartans are within three, 51-48, with 8:25 left.

8:42 p.m.: Since the 15:20 mark of the second half, Foster has outscored Michigan State 10-9. The freshman, a former four-star recruit, has been Duke's biggest offensive piece this half.

8:38 p.m.: After the Spartans get within seven, Duke gets buckets on back to back possessions and its lead is back to 11. Jay Bilas expressed the same sentiment, but it seems like every time Michigan State is poised for an extended run, Duke responds.

8:34 p.m.: And as I type that, Hall picks up his fourth foul with 12:38 left and he's heading to the bench. Dangerous stretch coming up for Michigan State, which is down 11 and now its most effective offensive player tonight.

8:32 p.m.: Hall just picked up his third foul. Given the deficit and how much time is left (12:50), Tom Izzo is wisely keeping him in the game. Spartans need him badly right now.

8:31 p.m.: A 3 from Duke's Caleb Foster and the Blue Devils' lead is back up to 11 with a out 13 minutes left.

8:27 p.m.: Hall has been the biggest offensive catalyst this half for the Spartans, with nine of the team's 13 points this period. He's up to a game-high 14 points.

8:21 p.m.: Hall wisely goes after Mitchell with three fouls, misses a turnaround, but Akins gets the rebound and lays it in. All of a sudden, the Spartans' deficit is down to just four.

8:19 p.m.: Mark Mitchell, Duke's leading scorer tonight with nine points, just picked up his third foul with 17:39 left in the game. Jon Scheyer is keeping him in the game.

8:17 p.m.: Absolutely gorgeous bounce pass from Hoggard to Hall in transition to get Michigan State on the board in the second half. Those are the kinds of opportunities the Spartans will need in the second half to get back into this.

8:08 p.m.: Duke outscored Michigan State 22-8 in the final 10 minutes of the first half.

8:04 p.m.: Some Michigan State individual stats at the half...

  • Tyson Walker: 4 points, 2-5 shooting, 2 rebounds

  • Malik Hall: 5 points, 2-5 shooting, 1 rebound, 2 fouls

  • A.J. Hoggard: 2 points, 1-6 shooting, 4 assists, 2 rebounds

  • Carson Cooper: 2 points, 1-2 shooting, 5 rebounds, 2 fouls

  • Mady Sissoko: 2 points, 1-3 shooting, 2 rebounds, 3 turnovers

8:00 p.m.: Some team halftime stats...

  • Field goal percentage: Duke 45%, Michigan State 29%

  • 3-point percentage: Duke 25%, Michigan State 15.4%

  • Free throws: Duke 11-14, Michigan State 0-2

  • Turnovers: Duke 10, Michigan State 9

  • Offensive rebounds: Michigan State 6, Duke 2

  • Second-chance points: Duke 3, Michigan State 3

Halftime: Duke 31, Michigan State 20

7:57 p.m.: A fitting end to the first half, with each team turning it over. Spartans had a well-designed play, but were unable to bring in a pass down low near the basket that could have led to a good scoring opportunity. Michigan State trails by 11 at half.

7:53 p.m.: Duke is 4 of its past 4 and Michigan State is 1 of its past 7. Blue Devils' lead is now up to three possessions with about a minute until half.

7:48 p.m.: Michigan State has missed its past four shots and is on a scoring drought of about three minutes. Too often settling for outside jumpers and not really testing Duke in the paint.

7:43 p.m.: A tough stretch there for Michigan State. Hoggard misses a wide-open 3 and Duke comes back on the other end and gets a 3 from Tyrese Proctor. Blue Devils starting to create a little cushion. Spartans are just 2 of 12 from 3 at the under-four timeout.

7:36 p.m.: Great recognition there from Kyle Filipowski. Had his back to the basket along the baseline, got triple-teamed and finds an open teammate near the basket. Duke now up three, 15-12.

7:29 p.m.: Duke looks totally out of sync offensively. Blue Devils are on pace for 30 turnovers tonight and showing very little ball movement. A lot of guys dribbling around in one-on-one situations.

7:26 p.m.: An Akins 3 is Michigan State's second of the game, matching the total from the Spartans' first two games combined.

7:21 p.m.: A Jeremy Roach 3-pointer evens it up heading into the under-12 media timeout. 9-9 with 11:45 left in the first half.

7:18 p.m.: Duke has five turnovers in the last 6:28. Blue Devils had gone 5:57 between its first basket and its second. Some sloppiness on their part, but Michigan State has looked pretty sharp defensively so far.

7:13 p.m.: Make that 2 of 13. The Spartans alone are 1 of 8.

7:09 p.m.: A bit of a sloppy start, with the two teams combining to go 2 of 9 from the field.

7:02 p.m.: Michigan State starters tonight:

  • G Tyson Walker

  • G Jaden Akins

  • G A.J. Hoggard

  • F Malik Hall

  • C Mady Sissoko
