This year sees Manchester City try to defend their crown and claim a historic fourth title in succession. Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City, who also won the Champions League and FA Cup last season, will have to see off Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and the rest to claim an unprecedented sixth league title in seven years.

Meanwhile Luton Town are making their first appearance in the Premier League, having risen from non-league in an incredible decade of progress. They followed Championship winners Burnley and second-placed Sheffield United in earning promotion to the top flight.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:34

In the end, it is business as usual as City claim Manchester bragging rights with a 3-1 victory over United at the Etihad. This historic Premier League derby was turned on its head after just eight minutes, though, as Rashford – who hit back at critics over his work rate in midweek – crashed in a rocketed opener off the underside of Ederson’s bar. Guardiola’s hosts came roaring back but remained behind at the break, with Haaland producing one of the misses of the season on the stroke of half-time when lofting over Onana’s target from point-blank rage. Yet that Red Devils resistance would not last forever, with Foden arrowing a fine equaliser in similar fashion to Rashford’s opener, before doubling his account in the 80th minute to put the hosts ahead. There was still time for Haaland’s redemption, too, with the Norway talisman sealing all three points and keeping the reigning champions just a point behind the league-leading Liverpool. City visit Liverpool at Anfield next Sunday after a midweek Champions League last-16 second-leg clash with Copenhagen, while United – who stay sixth and 11 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa – host Everton the day before. That is all from this entertaining Manchester derby, until next time. It is goodbye for now!

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:28

The United end is rapidly emptying as the visitors suffer more derby misery. The Red Devils are set for a third straight Premier League defeat at the Etihad, last having a longer run of successive away league defeats to rivals City from August 1952 to September 1955 (four in a row).

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:26

The home crowd are cheering every pass, further infuriating the visitors over in the far corner. Seemingly taking out the United frustration, Foden is hacked down in the middle by Casemiro.

Rodri has provided two assists for City here, making it the first time in his Premier League career that he has provided multiple assists in a single top-flight match.

17:25

Ederson teases Fernandes by taking his time to pick up a loose ball. The United captain does not take the bait, instead trudging back as the City supporters celebrate vociferously in the Etihad stands.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:24

Against no side has Man City striker Haaland scored more Premier League goals than his six against United. Indeed, only Sergio Aguero (eight) has scored more Manchester derby goals for the Citizens in the competition than Haaland.

WIDE! City have a lead to protect but De Bruyne fancies extending their advantage. The Belgium international cuts inside from the left-hand side before arrowing a right-footed drive just wide of the top-right corner.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:21

Much to the confusion of the home supporters, there will be EIGHT additional minutes to end this Manchester derby. Can Ten Hag's men grab an unlikely equaliser to dent City's title hopes?

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:20

Silva whips the second corner in quick succession but Haaland fails to win the first contact at the far post. Dalot looks to clear but De Bruyne is soon on the scene, refusing to allow United any chance to escape their own third.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:20

De Bruyne runs at Kambwala before his driven cross is cleared behind by Varane. The Belgium midfielder delivers the resulting set-piece, in front of the celebrating City supporters, before Onana unconvincingly punches behind when under pressure from Ake and Haaland.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:18

Having taken the lead with just 10 minutes remaining, City have barely allowed United a touch on the ball. Ten Hag's side are chasing shadows as they slowly trudge towards a gut-wrenching derby defeat.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:15

De Bruyne and Haaland have been awfully quiet for the hosts, but Foden makes the step up to deliver in the biggest moments for Guardiola. Gareth Southgate may want to build the England team around him for Euro 2024 but City will hope their boyhood supporter can power them to another Premier League title before that.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:14

United are the only team that Foden has scored 2+ goals against on multiple occasions in the Premier League (two). The City midfielder loves the Manchester derby!

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:12

Teenage midfielder Mainoo, who has impressed on his first Manchester derby start at the Etihad, also comes off for Amrabat.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:12

Ten Hag has to roll the dice once more. Garnacho makes way for young attacker Forson.

UNITED WANT A PENALTY! Flowing football from the visitors sees Mainoo prod through for Garnacho, who goes down after a thunderous sliding challenge from Ederson. The away side race around referee Madley and claim for a spot-kick but the official points for a goal-kick. The VAR then concurs with the original decision: no penalty!

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:08

Kambwala has two hands on the back of Foden but the referee waves claims for a free-kick away, before giving United the decision for a foul on McTominay. It seems like United got away with one there.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:06

A counter-attacking chance arises but Fernandes finds Antony offside with a short pass down the inside left-hand channel. City are in a hurry to take the free-kick, chasing a late winner against their fierce rivals.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:05

Rashford, who opened the scoring with a remarkable finish after just eight minutes, comes off for the out-of-form Antony. Ten Hag puts his trust in the former Ajax winger for the final stages.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:05

Foden's goal was City's 600th at the Etihad under manager Guardiola (across all competitions). Can the hosts find that all-important 601st to finish United off?

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:03

Kambwala's introduction has seen Dalot switch to left-back, Lindelof move inside and the young substitute cover at right-back. Ten Hag is having to work with makeshift options, missing the likes of Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:01

STRIKE! City remain patient outside the United box before Walker takes matters into his own hands, smashing a fizzing right-footed drive from range. Fortunately for Ten Hag's side, the effort is straight down Onana's throat and the goalkeeper catches with ease to take the sting out of the shot.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:01

De Bruyne and Silva hover over the free-kick, just outside the United area after Varane's foul on Haaland. The Belgium midfielder is the man to take it but fires a right-footed effort straight into the visitors' wall of red shirts.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

17:00

Youth comes on for experience as veteran centre-back Evans makes way for 19-year-old Kambwala, who is introduced into a cauldron of Etihad noise in this Manchester derby.

Yellow Card Raphaël Xavier Varane

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:58

Among Premier League players across all competitions this season, only Haaland (22) and Ollie Watkins (21) have scored more non-penalty goals than Foden (17). Can either of that City pair find another goal here to down United?

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:56

Referee Madley shrugs his shoulders and invites the United medical team on to check Onana's injury. The United goalkeeper seems to be signalling an issue with his thigh but, for all those inside the Etihad, it appears it may be for time-wasting purposes rather than a genuine issue.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:54

Foden cuts inside from the right flank once more before finding Silva, whose header back across goal is just too high for Haaland to convert. It could be a long 30 or so minutes for the visitors, who may be concerned as Onana goes down with his hands in the air after seemingly struggling with cramp.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:54

Only Sergio Aguero (eight) has more Manchester derby goals in the competition for Man City than Foden (five), who has dragged his side back into this contest. The pressure is mounting at the Etihad now, can United hold on?

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:53

Foden has 17 goals in all competitions for Man City this season, his most ever in a single campaign, surpassing the 16 he netted in 2020-21. Only against Brighton (six) has Foden scored more Premier League goals than he has against Man Utd (five).

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:51

This next half-hour could decide the result of the Premier League title, or at least have a seismic influence. City cannot afford to drop points in their pursuit of Liverpool. On the pitch, De Bruyne hangs a cross towards Dias but Onana punches behind for a corner.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:50

Having watched on as Foden dragged City level, Guardiola makes his first change. Doku is replaced by Alvarez.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:50

There is a temporary pause at the Etihad as a blue flare is on the floor at the feet of Onana inside the United area. The City supporters are seemingly taking their celebrations too far.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:50

Ten Hag is cautioned for his furious reaction on the touchline. The United manager is still seething with an earlier tackle on Rashford from Walker before City went down the other end and equalised through Foden's screamer.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:47

Rodri, like Fernandes in the first half, gets the assist with a simple offload. Foden does the rest with a dazzling rifled finish that almost bursts Onana's net.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:47

GOOOOOOOOOOOALLLLLLLL! CITY EQUALISE! Each of the boyhood stars have contributed in roaring fashion in this Manchester derby now. Having seen a Rashford piledrive in the first half, Foden received a short pass from Rodri before cutting inside from the left. The England winger makes it towards the edge of the area before arrowing a left-footed drive into the top-left corner. Onana has no chance and it is 1-1 at the Etihad!

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:47

Referee Madley deems Walker to have not fouled Rashford, who was almost clean through after McTominay's pass. The United winger did not need to go down there, and would have been in to test Ederson if he stayed on his feet.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:44

City have scored in each of their last 54 home games in all competitions. A goal here would equal their club record of scoring in 55 consecutive home games between January 2012 and January 2014. Can the hosts respond?

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:44

Rashford bundles into a corridor of no return as Walker and Foden ease the United winger out the way. The Red Devils are seeing a bit more of the ball in the opening stages of this second half, though.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:40

There is a quick VAR check as Haaland goes down under pressure from Varane, although the decision remains as no penalty. Doku went close just moments after but Onana did well to stretch and tip away, keeping the rebound chance away from the waiting Foden.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:40

McTominay has a chance to cross for Rashford but Dias recovers to intervene. De Bruyne then leads the counter-attacking charge but Foden sees his left-footed effort blocked.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:37

It is not all bad news, just yet, for Guardiola’s hosts. City have only lost two of the last 14 Premier League matches in which they've been behind at half-time (W8 D4), with their only two defeats in this scenario both coming away from home.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:35

Strap in once more as the second half of this Manchester derby gets under way! United are unbeaten in their last 143 Premier League matches when leading at half-time (W123, D20) dating back to September 2014 against Leicester City, but can they hold on here?

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:24

A penny for Guardiola's thoughts? City have accumulated 2.73 expected goals (xG), with Haaland's inexplicable miss on the stroke of half-time accounting for 0.89 xG alone, and had just under 75 per cent possession. Yet the defending English champions are a goal down heading into the second period, where Ten Hag will be praying United can hold on with another – even if somewhat unconvincing – defensive performance at their noisy, dominant neighbours.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:21

Against all the odds, United head into half-time leading City 1-0 at the Etihad. Rashford, who offered an outspoken defence of his work rate for his boyhood club this week, silenced the home crowd after just eight minutes with a roaring 25-yard piledriver past Ederson. Guardiola's side, as expected, came back even stronger but remain behind after Haaland produced one of the misses of the season just before the break.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:20

HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:20

Pass, pass, pass. City are in full control but cannot find a way through as Walker's blasting drive is deflected behind for a corner. De Bruyne delivers once more but Onana rises the highest to clear. That will be half-time at the Etihad.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:19

There are three minutes to end this half, with United still leading 1-0. Haaland's unexplainable miss ranks as a chance that is scored 0.89 times, according to Opta's expected goal model. How can the City striker atone for that error?

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:17

WHAT A MISS! Never would any City supporter expect this one. Doku touches inside for Rodri, who clips towards the back post for Foden. The England winger puts it on a plate for Haaland, who somehow hooks over from point-blank range with a left-footed tap-in. All of the Etihad was ready to celebrate but, somehow, the Norway talisman misses when it was easier to score with the simplest of volleyed finishes.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:17

Mainoo (18 years and 319 days) is the third 18-year-old Englishman to start for United against City in the Premier League, after Phil Neville and Rashford. The youthful midfielder has just gone down holding his head after blocking a full-blooded Foden drive.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:15

Rodri angles a delicate diagonal for Walker, who heads back towards the edge of the area. Casemiro fails to get the required touch to clear but De Bruyne can only rifle a horrible, wayward right-footed drive into the stand behind Onana's goal.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:13

Half-time is rapidly approaching on the blue side of Manchester, where it is the Red Devils making all the noise. United, inadvertently, are furthering Liverpool's title hopes with the 1-0 scoreline as it stands. Can Guardiola get a much-needed reaction from the hosts?

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:10

For all of Ten Hag's critics, the United manager has his side well-drilled and set up to defend against City's constant pressure. The Red Devils played in a similar fashion away at Liverpool, which ended in a goalless Anfield draw, and look comfortable for large parts in doing so here.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:10

De Bruyne remains City's chief creative threat. The Belgian touches inside from the right for Foden, whose left-footed half-volley is blocked before it can reach Onana. Ten Hag's side have rarely left their own defensive third, but still lead 1-0 at the Etihad.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:08

Opting to go alone this time, De Bruyne tries his luck from a tight angle but drags a left-footed drive well wide to Onana's left. The United goalkeeper takes his time before launching long to McTominay. This is almost a throwback to United's tactical plans when playing off the physicality of Marouane Fellaini.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:06

WHAT A STOP! This is an aerial bombardment of the United area. De Bruyne whips a delicate delivery towards the near post, where Varane clears as far as Rodri. The Spain midfielder volleys towards the bottom-right corner with a first-time right-footed strike, but Onana sprawls across to tip away for a corner.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:05

HAALAND HAS TO HIT THE TARGET! Doku has another run at Dalot before his deflected attempt spins off the head of Casemiro. Haaland is completely unmarked inside the area, just past the penalty spot, but loops a wayward header well over without testing Onana.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:04

Against no side has Man City striker Haaland scored more Premier League goals than his five against United. Indeed, only Sergio Aguero (eight) has scored more Manchester derby goals for the Citizens in the competition than Haaland, who has been surprisingly quiet so far.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:01

OVER! Rodri sprays out to Doku, who plays a one-two inside the United area with Silva before angling a woeful right-footed effort well over Onana's target. The City winger needs to deliver more quality for Guardiola on that flank.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

16:00

Ten Hag has United set up to defend with patience. Lindelof has just conceded the first, after 25 or so minutes, free-kick of the game. City are being allowed to play football by the visitors but are yet to break their plucky resistance, led by the impressive Onana.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:58

Foden has been involved in nine goals in his last 10 Premier League appearances for City, scoring five and assisting four. Overall he has 16 goal involvements this season (nine goals, seven assists), his joint-most in a single league campaign. The England international has squandered two great chances here, though.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:58

Rodri sets his sights on Onana's goal from range but Varane deflects behind for, you guessed it, another corner. A seventh set-piece comes to nothing, as if that is a surprise to any inside the Etihad.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:56

There are shouts for handball as Dalot blocks behind for yet another corner. City attempt to take it quickly but the VAR wants to take a quick look at this one... However, the decision is soon confirmed as no penalty!

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:55

Half a chance! Fernandes clips over the top for McTominay but the ball floats over to Rashford, who gets his legs in a tangle and makes minimal contact with a right-footed volley. It is a breathless opening to this Manchester derby.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:54

De Bruyne goes down the line again but, this time, it is Mainoo who slides to block behind for a corner, which comes to nothing once more. Guardiola's men must make more of these set-piece chances.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:54

This is the 12th time Man City have fallen behind in a Premier League game this season; only in 2019-20 (13) have they done so more in a single campaign under Guardiola. That was the last campaign in which they did not win the title... a bad omen?

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:54

City supporters are furious once again as Doku's cross appears to deflect off Dalot for a corner, but Onana is deemed to have kept the ball in play. The United goalkeeper has quietly gone about his business here and made an impressive start between the posts.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:50

FODEN HAS TO SCORE! United are caught playing a high line and De Bruyne rolls through for the unmarked Foden. The England winger has just Onana to beat in a one-on-one situation but slides his right-footed effort straight at Onana, who touches behind for a corner that comes to nothing.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:49

Rashford! The United winger is sent racing through down the middle but makes a mess of his headed touch, with Walker speeding back to intervene. It does not go down as a shot on goal, or a missed chance, but what an opportunity for the visitors on the break.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:47

This is the eighth time that Man Utd have gone 1-0 up inside the opening 10 minutes of a Premier League meeting with rivals Manchester City. They have won each of the first seven such instances, but can they make it eight in a row?

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:47

SAVE! United cause their own problems as the visitors fail to deal with a throw-in. Silva sneaks in and sends Foden through on goal but the England midfielder's low right-footed strike is kicked behind by Onana. The resulting corner comes to nothing shortly after.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:45

Foden's first right-sided corner is flicked behind by a diving Fernandes. The England winger delivers a second set-piece but Fernandes is there, again, to head clear. De Bruyne then dances around Casemiro but fails to test the United defence.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:44

Only Wayne Rooney (eight) and Eric Cantona (seven) have scored more Premier goals for Man Utd versus Man City than Rashford (five). What a way to get this Manchester derby going, too!

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:43

Make no mistake, City are rattled. Dias spins, twists and turns on his own line and smashes out for a corner when Fernandes closes down. The United captain delivers the left-sided set-piece but Ederson punches away.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:43

What a statement from Rashford, who had come out this week and hit back at critics over his work ethic with boyhood club United. City were in full control but appear stunned in the early stages at the Etihad now.

Goal Marcus Rashford

Manchester City vs Manchester United

De Bruyne overlaps Foden but his right-sided delivery is headed into the air by Evans before Onana pounces to collect. The City fans are already jeering and suggesting United are wasting time.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:38

CLOSE! Stones plays out to the right for Foden, who glides inside and finds Doku on the opposite flank. The City winger goes down the line before his left-footed cross almost finds the top-left corner. Onana appears concerned for a moment before watching the effort sail over his crossbar.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:35

PENALTY APPEAL! De Bruyne disguises a wonderful pass into the United area for Stones, who goes down when Casemiro wraps a leg from behind to tackle. The referee waves play on and the VAR concurs with the original decision.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:34

De Bruyne crosses from the second corner in quick succession but United clear with ease at the front post. Owing to injuries, this is only the fourth time the Belgian midfielder and Haaland are starting a match together in the Premier League this season.

Ten Hag opts for two alterations from the narrow win over Forest. Amrabat is dropped down to the substitutes for Evans, whose introduction will see Lindelof start as a makeshift left-back. Mainoo also comes in for the out-of-form Antony, with Fernandes and Garnacho operating in behind versatile forward Rashford.

Manchester City vs Manchester United

15:21

Guardiola makes five changes from the resounding Luton win. Backup goalkeeper Ortega drops out for first-choice option Ederson, while Dias replaces Akanji. Kovacic and Nunes also move down to the bench, with Rodri and Foden returning in a change that shifts Silva back to holding midfield. Jack Grealish misses out through injury, with Doku taking his place alongside the in-form pairing of Haaland and De Bruyne. The fit-again Gvardiol also returns as a substitute.

For all of City’s impressive returns in recent weeks, months and years, United have also lost just once in 2024. The Red Devils are still some 11 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa in sixth, with their Champions League hopes dwindling with every game that goes by. City have pushed United into darkness of the Manchester shadows, winning five of the last six Premier League titles in a remarkable dominant period for the blue side of the city. Pep Guardiola’s side trail Liverpool by four points at the Premier League summit, though would cut the gap to just one if they make it 19 games unbeaten with victory here. The reigning English and European champions were 6-2 victors over Luton Town in the FA Cup on Tuesday, while they beat Bournemouth 1-0 in their last league outing.
