Major champions Justin Thomas, Wyndham Clark added to field of The American Express

Two-time major champion Justin Thomas and reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark are among the latest players to commit to The American Express PGA Tour event in La Quinta on Jan. 18-21.

In addition, nine-time PGA Tour winner Matt Kuchar will return to the La Quinta field for the first time since 2016.

They join a field that includes eight of the top 23 players in the Official World Golf Rankings, including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, No. 5 Patrick Cantlay and No. 6 Xander Schauffele.

The $8.4 million tournament will be played on three courses in La Quinta -- the Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament courses at PGA West and La Quinta Country Club.

Thomas is a two-time winner of the PGA Championship, in 2017 and 2022, part of a career that has seen him win 15 times on the PGA Tour and play on three Ryder Cups and three Presidents Cups for the United States. Thomas didn’t win a tournament in 2023, but did earn a captain’s selection for the Ryder Cup. Thomas has played in the desert tournament twice in 2014 and 2015, finishing seventh in the 2015 event.

Clark has been a consistent player in The American Express field even before winning his first major title at the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club last June. Clark held off Rory McIlroy for the major victory, just his second tour win.

Kuchar hasn’t played in the desert since 2016, one year after he tied for second in the tournament behind Bill Haas. Kuchar’s biggest wins came at the 2004 Players Championship and the 2013 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.

Other names added to the field this week are Brandt Snedeker, a nine-time winner on the tour, and Joel Dahmen.

Among the top players already in the field are Tom Kim, Jason Day, Sam Burns, Tony Finau and Rickie Fowler.
