Lowndes Vikings near top off Class 7A polls

Mar. 8—VALDOSTA — Reigning state champions Lowndes remains near the top of Class 7A in early baseball rankings. Two polls have the Vikings No. 2 in the state

MaxPreps' latest poll, released March 7, has Lowndes (9-2) only trailing Parkview (8-2). The same holds for Score Atlanta's Week 3 poll, Parkview No. 1 and Lowndes No. 2.

The polls vary from there. Score Atlanta likes Buford third, while it's Grayson according to MaxPreps' calculation. Both have North Gwinnett No. 4 and Marietta No. 5

No other Region 1 schools are in either's top 10. MaxPreps has Colquitt County (8-6) 13th.

Lowndes dropped only its second game of the season Thursday against Florida's Trinity Christian Academy, 5-4.

Trinity led all the way, though the Vikings posted two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded when the contest ended.

GameChanger stats show Tate Sirmans with three hits. Jordan Hudson, Nate Slaughter and Matthew Kerrigan all drove in runs.

Lowndes was scheduled to play on the road in an all-Tallahassee doubleheader Friday against Chiles and Lincoln. They begin region Tuesday at home against Richmond Hill The Wildcats are 5-4, pending a Friday doubleheader against South Effingham.

Elsewhere in 1-7A, Camden County goes Tuesday to Colquitt. Valdosta, 4-5, going into a Friday game at Columbia, Florida, will wait a week before beginning region play.
