LOCAL ROUNDUP: Wesleyan baseball downs Charlotte Christian

Mar. 21—CHARLOTTE — Wesleyan Christian beat familiar foe Charlotte Christian 10-3 in nonconference baseball Wednesday at Charlotte Christian.

Sawyer Black went 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Trojans (8-1), ranked No. 4 in the state overall and No. 1 among NCISAA 4A teams. Nick Papciak had two hits, including a double, while Hudson Lance added two hits and Domaine Vann had two hits and an RBI.

Josh Hammond got the pitching win, striking out four in three innings. Hudson Lace added five strikeouts while allowing just two hits and no walks in three shutout innings. Sam Cozart struck out two of the three batters he faced.

THOMASVILLE, HIGH POINT CENTRAL

HIGH POINT — Thomasville won 16-0 in four innings against High Point Central in nonconference baseball Wednesday at Central.

Travail Barnes had two hits, including a triple, and four RBIs to lead the Bulldogs. Matthew Bankhead also had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs while Charles Norman had a hit and two RBIs.

Leonel Guzman got the complete-game pitching win, striking out seven while allowing just one hit and one walk.

Thomasville improved to 2-4 overall while the Bison dipped to 0-8.

SOFTBALL

TW ANDREWS, NORTH FORSYTH

HIGH POINT — T.W. Andrews beat North Forsyth 14-0 in Mid-State 2A Conference softball Wednesday at Montlieu Academy of Technology. The Red Raiders improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

SOUTHERN GUILFORD, SOUTHWEST GUILFORD

HIGH POINT — Southern Guilford topped Southwest Guilford 3-2 in nonconference softball Wednesday at Southwest.

Kenly Brown doubled and drove in a run for the Storm (2-6), who led 3-0 through three innings. Naomi Hunt added a double while Madison Goins had two hits. Brown got the pitching win, striking out seven in seven innings.

Camren Allen had two hits while Damyia McFadden doubled for the Cowgirls (8-2). Miracle Kendrick struck out three in seven innings.

LEDFORD, SOUTHEAST GUILFORD

PLEASANT GARDEN — Ledford won 18-0 in three innings against Southeast Guilford in nonconference softball Wednesday at Southeast.

Emma Tesh doubled, tripled and drove in four runs for the Panthers (8-0). Alaina Hererra had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs, while Hailey Hoots added a double and four RBIs. Leah Leonard also had two hits and two RBIs.

Hoots got the pitching win, striking out three in two innings, while Tesh added a strikeout in one four-batter inning. The duo combined not to allow a hit.

GIRLS SOCCER

BISHOP McGUINNESS, TMASA

GREENSBORO — Bishop McGuinness cruised to an 11-0 win against Triad Math & Science in Northwest Piedmont 1A Conference girls soccer Wednesday in Greensboro.

Laney Heafner had two goals and an assist for the Villains (3-3-1 overall, 2-0 conference). Claire Sullivan also scored two goals, while Susanna Drake, Alyssa Dixon-Velez, Lilly Schultz and Anna Aufrance each had a goal and an assist.

Helen Thompson, Ella Hedric and Sofia Walter each scored a goal while Ashley Hawley had two assists. Hannah Reeves and Emelia Allred split time in goal.

LEDFORD, EAST ROWAN

SALISBURY — Ledford beat East Rowan 4-0 in nonconference girls soccer Wednesday at East Rowan.

Maddie McCormack scored two goals for the Panthers (4-3-1). Aislin Pierce and Jasey Terry each had a goal while Carmen Hughes added an assist. Sanna Simpson made five saves in goal.

THOMASVILLE, NORTH ROWAN

THOMASVILLE — Thomasville raced past North Rowan 6-2 in Central Carolina 1A/2A Conference girls soccer Wednesday at Thomasville. The Bulldogs improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

WHEATMORE, EASTERN RANDOLPH

RAMSEUR — Wheatmore rolled by Eastern Randolph 9-0 in PAC 1A/2A girls soccer Wednesday at Eastern Randolph.

Natalie Bowman scored eight goals and dished one assist to lead the Warriors (4-2 overall, 3-0 conference). Brianna Hill added a goal while Maggie Messner had two assists. Lucy Lockwood made five saves in goal.

BOYS GOLF

AT JAMESTOWN PARK

JAMESTOWN PARK — Bishop McGuinness won Wednesday's three-game boys golf match at Jamestown Park. The Villains shot a team score of 172, ahead of Southwest Guilford with a 186 and Ragsdale with a 202.

Sam Sherrill and Jack Freeman each shot a 42 to lead the Villains, followed by Burns Handy with a 43 and Johnathan Riccoboni with a 45.

AT OAK HOLLOW

HIGH POINT — Ledford beat High Point Central 180-213 in nonconference boys golf Wednesday at Oak Hollow Golf Course.

Griffin Hawks shot a 40 to lead the Panthers, followed by Connor Vernon with a 43, Scott Yaudes with a 46 and Isaac Shaver with a 51.

LACROSSE

BISHOP McGUINNESS, ATKINS

KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness rolled past Atkins 14-2 in Mid-State/Mid-Piedmont/Northwest Piedmont Conference boys lacrosse Wednesday at Bishop. The Villains improved to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

In the girls match, Bishop won 19-3 to improve to 7-0. Kate Dennen had four goals, while Ella Suire had three goals and one assist. Mackenzie Bowen added a goal and two assists, and Finley Miller, Morgan Aho and Sarah Pulliam each scored two goals to highlight the offense.

BOYS TENNIS

EAST DAVIDSON, THOMASVILLE

THOMASVILLE — East Davidson defeated Thomasville 7-2 in Central Carolina 1A/2A Conference boys tennis Wednesday at Thomasville.

Zach Tooley (6-1, 6-1), Allen Simmons (6-2, 6-1), Cam Eddinger (6-0, 6-0), Nicholas Barrow (6-2, 6-1) and Casey Hilton (6-3, 6-1) won in singles for the Golden Eagles. Gaige Blackburn/Tooley (8-6) and Simmons/Eddinger (8-3) won in doubles.

Casey Sanchez (3-6, 7-6(7-4), 10-8) won in singles while Joel Ignacio/Oscar Dublina (8-3) won in doubles for the Bulldogs.

East improved to 3-4 overall and 3-2 while Thomasville dipped to 1-4 and 1-3.

WHEATMORE, RANDLEMAN

ASHEBORO — Wheatmore upended Randleman 6-3 in PAC 1A/2A boys tennis Wednesday at the Asheboro Racquet and Swim Club. The Warriors improved to 4-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

BASEBALL SCHEDULE CHANGE

HIGH POINT — High Point University has moved the start time for Friday's baseball game against Richmond. The Panthers will now play at noon, instead of the originally scheduled 6 p.m.

Game times will remain at 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

GIFFA NAMED FINALIST FOR LOU HENSON AWARD

BOSTON — High Point University's Kezza Giffa has been selected as a finalist for the Lou Henson National Player of the Year. The annual award is presented to the top player in mid-major basketball, and Giffa is one of 36 named as a finalist.

Giffa came to High Point this season as a transfer from Daytona State. He became one of the team's top scorers, sitting second on the team with 15.9 points per game. He has scored 20 or more points in 11 games, including a career-high 37 points against Winthrop — tying for sixth best in program history.

He ranks top-10 in the country in both free throws made and attempted and is second on the team in assists with 2.94 per game. He was conference player of the week four times, Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week on Jan. 23 and Brian Burton's Field of 68 Mid-Major Player of the Week on Feb. 5.

Giffa was selected Big South Conference First-Team All-Conference.

DUDLEY, VAN NIEKERK EARN WEEKLY CONFERENCE TRACK AWARDS

CHARLOTTE — High Point University's Deron Dudley and Chris Van Niekerk are among this week's Big South Track & Field Athletes of the Week.

Dudley was named the Male Track Athlete of the Week while Van Niekerk was named the Field Athlete of the Week for their performances during High Point's weekend in the 49er Classic hosted by Charlotte.

Dudley competed in the men's 100-meter dash and the 4x100 relay. He won the 100m race with a time of 10.42 seconds and helped lead the relay team to another first place finish later in the day with a time of 40.95 seconds.

Van Niekerk competed in the men's discus and placed second overall after throwing 55.89m.
