LOCAL ROUNDUP: DACC softball ends regular season on high note

Apr. 30—DANVILLE — The Danville Area Community College softball team ended the regular season on a high over the weekend.

The Lady Jaguars swept Illinois Central College 3-2 and 18-8 on Saturday and John Wood Community College 20-3 and 16-2 on Sunday.

In the first game against ICC, Kenley VanBibber had the walk-off single in the ninth to win the game for DACC, while Ali Grenzebach and Amaria Wall each had an RBI.

Alyssa Acton had three hits with five RBIs for the Jaguars in the second game, while Wall had three hits and four RBI's, Rylee Richey had three hits and two RBIs, Grenzebach had tow hits and three RBIs, Pailei Cripe had two hits and a RBI, and Molly Besser and Kennedy Hudson each had one RBI.

In Sunday's first game, Alyvia Jackson had two hits and three RBIs for the Lady Jaguars, while Wall and Acton each had two hits and two RBIs, Kelsey Martlage had three RBIs, Richey had two RBIs, Grenzebach and Besser had two hits and a RBI and Gloria Richardson, Hudson, Kynedi Humphrey and Kailey Frischkorn each had one RBI.

Richey, Hudson and Humphrey each had two hits and three RBIs in the second game, Richardson had three hits and three RBIs while Acton had two hits and two RBIs, Grenzebach had one RBI and Besser and Wall each had two hits.

The Jaguars end the regular season at 31-13 and will start action at the Region 24 Tournament later this week.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

DACC splits with Lewis & Clark

GODFREY — The Jaguars was able to get two wins out of four games with the Trailblazers over the weekend.

Danville Area Community College started the weekend with a close 7-6 loss in the first game on Saturday. Kody Morton had three hits and two RBIs for the Jaguars, while Brock Bacus and Ryan DeGroot each had two hits and a RBI, Shea Zbrozek had one RBI and Adam Evans had two hits.

The Jaguars rebounded with an 11-2 win in the second game. Evans had three hits with two home runs and five RBIs, while Nathan Edders had two hits and two RBIs, Bacus had two RBIs, Drew Pinkston had two hits and a RBI and DeGroot had one RBI.

DACC started Saturday off with a 2-0 win as NicK Krueger gave up only three hits and had five strikeouts. Mason Rice and Evans backed him up with each getting an RBI.

In the second game, the Traiblazers scored five runs in the eighth and hung on to get an 9-8 win.

Jackson Raaf had two hits and three RBIs for the Jaguars, while Evans had three hits and two RBIs, Morton, DeGroot and Edders each had one RBI and Zbrosek had two hits.

The Jaguars are 20-25.

PREP BASEBALL

Westville 15, Schlarman 0

WESTVILLE — The Tigers had 11 hits as they beat the Hilltoppers in four innings.

Drew Wichtowski had two hits with a home run and three RBIs, while Easton Barney had two hits and three RBIs, Cade Schaumburg and Zach Russell each had two hits and two RBIs and Matt Darling had two hits and a RBI.

Owen Jones and Ricky Soderstrom each had a hit for Schlarman Academy.

The Tigers are 18-4 and 8-0 in the Vermilion Valley Conference and will face Paxton-Buckley-Loda today.

N. Vermillion sweeps Attica

ATTICA, Ind. — The Falcons won the first game 9-8 and the second, 15-8 to sweep the Red Ramblers.

Aden Rangel had three hits and two RBIs in the first game for North Vermillion, while Andrew Botner had two hits and two RBIs, Emmitt Klugow had two hits and a RBI, Quintin Holt had a RBI and Gavin Bean added two hits.

Bean had three hits and one RBI in the second game for the Falcons, while Logan Lewis had two hits and two RBIs, Rangel had two RBIs and Aiden Hinchee, Shawn Martin and Botner each had one hit.

The Falcons will next play Riverton Parke on Wednesday.

PREP SOFTBALL

Westville 11, Schlarman 0

WESTVILLE — The Tigers scored nine runs as they beat the Hilltoppers in five innings.

Laney Cook had a grand slam and four RBIs for Westville, while Layla Atwood had two RBIs, Lily Kiesel and Daylin Zaayer each had one RBI and Abby Sabalaskey had 12 strikeouts and gave up only two hits.

Irene Rangel had both hits for Schlarman Academy, who will face Watseka on Friday.

The Tigers are 20-2 and will face Georgetown-Ridge Farm on Wednesday.

ARMSTRONG — The Comets took the lead early, but scored a run in the seventh on an error to get past the Trojans.

Gracie Hanner had two hits and a RBI for Oakwood, who was up 5-1 at one point, while Samantha Dunavan had a triple and Gracie Enos had seven strikeouts for the win.

Elle Jameson, Brynn Spencer and Carly Grant each had one RBI for Armstrong-Potomac, who are 6-8 and will face Donovan on Thursday.

The Comets were coming off a 14-2 win over Wayne City and a 3-2 loss to Hustonville/Palestine at the Hutsonville Round Robin on Saturday.

In the first game, Dunavan had three hits with three RBIs for Oakwood, while Caydence Vermillion had two hits and three RBIs, Sophia Hart, Hanner and Gracie Enos each had two hits and a RBI and Jada Finley added an RBI.

In the second game, Enos had two of the three Oakwood hits and had the lone RBI.

Covington 12, Crawfordsville 2

COVINGTON, Ind. — The Trojans scored in all but one inning as they beat the Athenians in five innings on Saturday.

Ashlyn Alexander had two hits and two RBIs for Covington, while Lily Gayler had two RBIs, and Emma Holycross and Alex Sutherlin each had one RBI.

Brooke Rottman had five strikeouts in four innings to get the win for Covington, who will play Seeger today.

N. Vermillion swept by Attica

ATTICA, Ind. — The Lady Falcons lost an offensive battle, 26-14 , in the first game and 10-5 in the second game to get swept by the Red Ramblers.

Ava Jumps had four hits with a home run and six RBIs for North Vermillion in the first game, while Cami Phelps had four hits with a home run and two RBIs, Tessa Downs had two RBIs, Olivia Nale had two hits and a RBI and Willow Campbell, Pailynn Nichols and Hope Kawata each had one RBI.

In the second game, Downs had two RBIs, while Nale had three hits and an RBI and Phelps added a RBI.

PREP BOYS TRACK

Danville second at Ward Invite

CHAMPAIGN — The Danville boys track team took on six other teams at the Gene Ward Invitational on Friday and ended up second to Champaign Centennial.

D'Mario Jackson won the 100 (11.03 seconds) and 200 (22.14) meter runs for the Vikings, while Tayvion Diltz won the shot put (15.24 meters), Curtis Beasley won the discus (38.12m), Matthew Sherman won the pole vault (3.65m) and Davari Boyd won the long jump (6.33m).

Victor Jones and PerSirus Menifield were tied for second in the high jump (1.85m), while Josiah Hoskins was third in the 110 hurdles (16.52), Jesse Grupe was tied for third in the pole vault (2.62m), Jackson was fourth in the 400 (53.08), Jayden Rowell was fourth in the 100 (11.28), Boyd was fourth in the 200 (23.28), A'Jani Davis was fourth in the shot put (11.78m) and Revan Bailey was fifth in the 1,600 (5:12.83).

The 400 relay team of Boyd, Rowell, Jerry Reed III and Jackson was second at 43.14, while the 800 team of Boyd, Rowell, Reed and Miles Littlepaige took second at 1:33.17.

Local teams battle at SJO

ST. JOSEPH — Eight local teams took part in Saturday's Spartan Classic at St. Joseph-Ogden High School.

Tyler Miller won the 300 meter hurdles (40.65) for Westville, who was eighth overall.

Brysen Vasquez won the 400 (50.90) for Salt Fork, who was ninth while Kamdyn Keller was third in the triple jump (12.05m) and Tyler Smoot was fourth in the 800 (2:02.79). Oakwood was 11th with Connor Smith taking third in the 400 (51.47) and fifth in the 100 (11.41).

Schlarman Academy was 14th with Jerrius Atkinson taking second in the 110 hurdles (15.22) and Noah Fowler fifth in the high jump (1.77m), while Armstrong-Potomac took 17th with Cole Bailey taking sixth in the 300 hurdles (43.84) and Eli Kennel taking sixth in the pole vault (3.35m). Ayden Ingram was fourth in the long jump (5.93m) for Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin, who was 21st and James Cody was fourth in the 300 hurdles (42.85) for Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Chrisman, who ended up 23rd.

PREP GIRLS TRACK

Danville second at Urbana

URBANA — The Lady Vikings finished only behind Kankakee to take second in the Urbana Girls Track Invitational on Saturday.

Nickiya Shields won the 100 (15.36 seconds) and 300 (45.76) hurdles and triple jump (11.01 meters) for Danville, while Taniyah Reynolds took second in the 100 (12.70) and third in the 200 (26.60), Jada Bell was fifth in the shot put (10.25m) and Samantha Brown was fifth in the pole vault (2.73m).

The 400 relay team of Reynolds, Jhe'Nyi Parker, Da'Sani Lewis and Ashanti Conaway was second (48.93) while the same team also took second in the 800 relay (1:44.61).

Local teams compete in Monticello

MONTICELLO — Salt Fork, Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Chrisman and Oakwood battled at the Lady Sages Invitational on Friday at Monticello High School.

Hannah Downing won the 300 (51.74 seconds) and was fifth in the 100 (18.04) hurdles for the Storm, who ended up 13th as a team.

GRFC ended up 17th with Haley Carlton taking fourth with an attempt of 3.05 meters in the pole vault, while Oakwood was 18th with Aubri Elliott taking fifth in the 100 (13.34) and sixth in the 200 (29.18).

PREP TRACK

Covington hosts invitational

COVINGTON, Ind. — The Covington boys and girls track teams hosted Seeger, North Vermillion, North Montgomery and Riverside in Saturday's Covington Invitational.

Finnian McLain won the 110 (15.78 seconds) and 300 hurdles (41.72) for the Patriots in the non-team scoring event, while Konner Brenner won the 800 (2:07) and the 1,600 relay team of Brenner, McLain, Nicholas Wallpe and Landon Dispennett won in 3:35.75 and the 3,200 team of Ethan Guminski, Nathan Odle, John Puterbaugh and Brenner won in 8:57.72.

Bradley Cope won the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches) for North Vermillion, while Andre Buchhaas won the discus (126-9) and Karter Jackson won the 1,600 (4:53.41).

Averey Powell was third in the 100 (11.43) for Covington.

In the girls meet, Hadessah Austin won the 800 (2:30) for Seeger, while Adara Austin won the 1,600 (6:00), Claire Nern won the 3,200 (13:20), Caleigh Purcell won the 300 hurdles (50.40) and the 3,200 relay team of Austin, Purcell, Emily Greene and Hayden Frodge won in 11:21.

Isabell Edney won the shot put (31-3 1/2) for North Vermillion, while Lauren Ellis won the discus (115-6).

COLLEGE GOLF

Illini take second at Big Ten

COLUMBUS — After eight years as Big Ten Champions, the Illini's streak ended on Sunday as they finished second to Northwestern.

"Today was representative of the whole week," Danville native and Illinois head coach Mike Small said. "Hats off to Northwestern. They controlled the narrative and the energy from Day 1. Nobody else played to that level. They had four guys finish in the top 10, that's just bringing it, and that's what winners do at this tournament — it has to be a total team effort. They were better from tee to green, better around the greens, and it was just a pretty decisive win. We didn't have much answer for that. Today was the same as the other two days. We had some good stretches, some good spots — maybe more good spots today — but we still played some loose golf that you shouldn't have this time of year."

Jackson Buchanan was second over all with a score of 212 in the three-round tournament, while Max Herendeen was tied for 16th (223), Piercen Hunt was tied for 19th (225), Ryan Voois was tied for 26th (226) and Ethan Wilson was tied for 30th (227).
